Hey, we haven't had a question like this in a while! :-)
Every now and then someone will come on and rant about the stupid questions on here. I did it myself when I first started on Yahoo.
Sometimes people are going/have been to the vet and just want a bit of support, but I agree that it really is scary/depressing when people genuinely don't seem to have a clue what a vet is for!!
My most hated phrase is 'don't tell me to go to a vet' - I mean, what the hell is that?!
Last bit of rant - even well meaning people are often clueless - they think they can get diagnoses on the internet, they don't seem to GET that this is impossible!

I see this all the time and these responses. I don't know why but maybe some people are poor and they love their dog but can't afford an emergency vet visit or maybe they are just jerks trying to make people mad. Sometimes it is a kid who can't really do anything.
I am not trying to make excuses but usually when I ask (just asked one about occasional diarrhea) it is just seeing if I can get an answer or some insight before I go to or call the vet. As my dog already has an incurable condition that is aggravated by stress we try not to take him to the vet unless necessary right now as that is super stressful on him and he gets worse every visit.

As someone who both asks and answers these questions, let me put it another way. When you are sick, do you rush right to the doctor?
For most of us, going to the vet at the smallest sign of a problem isn't really a feasible option. Whether it's cost, time, location, whatever, there are generally reasons we don't/can't go straight to a vet. Of course, most of what you see on here is fairly minor - a dog throwing up CAN be serious, of course, but more likely than not, it's just a stomach upset.
As with humans, there are many simple, effective home remedies that can be used with pets. People and animals survived thousands of years without vets, so it's not that far-fetched to do it now. I've spoken to many people who had the vet tell them to do a home remedy, rather than a prescribed medication.
Also, consider the vast amount of literature on the topic of home remedies for pets. If there were anything harmful in these books, they wouldn't be published. Much of what you read on Yahoo answers is identical to what you'd find in a book on animal care. Granted, you're going to get people who don't have a clue, but those are generally easy to spot.
I understand your concern about people inadvertently hurting their animals, but I think you need to realize that these people love their pets. There isn't always need for a vet - just like there isn't always need for a doctor.

I wish I knew why people use the computer for answers like why their dog is so sick.Just a phone call to the vet would be a step in the right direction.
