おはよう is an informal way to say "good morning." Literally it means something like "it's early," but it's said as a greeting. Usually when it's written with our alphabet it's spelled Ohayou or Ohayo, although, as you say, it's pronounced about the same as the name of the state of Ohio!

The more formal way to say "good morning" in Japanese is おはようございます (ohayou gozaimas').

Normally written 'Ohayo' in Latin letters, otherwise it would sound like [oh-hee-oh]. Good morning.

O-ha-i-o is a state near the Great Lakes.
O-ha-yo-u is "Mornin'".
They only sound alike if you're a stupid foreigner.
