Whilst it is theoretically possible, I suspect that Nikon would rather keep bracketing off the D40 so that you would need to upgrade to a more up-market model to get the feature. That's what marketing is all about!

Between the Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XT, I'd say go with Nikon. The reason being is that the Nikon has several years more of technology over the XT, better build, better image quality, and better a LCD. Even though the D40 will only AF with AF-S lenses, these are the way of the future for Nikon.

Probably, but I don't think they will do this for the reason previously mentioned. It's not that difficult to change ev manually and self-bracket. The D40 has a great exposure system so once you become used to how the camera exposes it should reduce the need to bracket to get the desired exposure.
