Specifically, two cats a couple years apart grow up together. The older one dies. Will the younger one remember his buddy next year, in two years?

Cats are good at remembering habitual things, like using the litter box. Many cats will come out to greet you when you come home and my cat does respond to her name.

While those are all indications of cat memory, I think you are being overly sentimental and anthropomorphic if you think Cat A will remember Cat B two years after B's death.

Probably. My cat comes when I whistle a specific tune, but not others. Cats are very trainable with patience, and once that pattern is set in memory, it seems to stay there.

well my cat can recognize our car coming home when it turns the corner on the top of our street which is about a 1/4 mi.( my car is not abnormally loud ) but when i went to Germany and Italy and came back 3 weeks later she didn't look excited so i don't think she recognized me.
about the 2 cat question i think if you have the smell of the other cat she will remember. but idk it would be hard to tell
hope i helped

Yes, especially if it thinks it sees the other cat in the yard. Animals have memories.

I had always heard that cats have very short memories....but that isn't true. My friends cat remembers me after 8 months of not seeing her.
Get him another playmate! That would help both of you to move on.

They seem to remember as well as we do, although their attention span is different. Its very possible he will remember his buddy for a long time.

Probably, but if you think this will affect him I don't think it will because he will adapt to not having his companion around.
