Because the world is very impersonal. People are who they are by their title. My beliefs have no title, unless you count non-religious as a title, which some people try to. As a result I really don't mention it to people around me unless it is necessary.
Here's and interesting assumption I see all the time. People thinking that since atheist do not believe in God they are immoral and detached from any sort of spirituality. Buddhism is atheistic and very spiritual. People don't realize this because they believe that Buddhist worship Buddha.
It is more important that we express our beliefs through actions and not titles.

Friend: Lots of people assume that stability can only come through accepting labels. Labels are limiting and result in beliefs that are not able to mature and immaturity will eventually disable a person. Why you are you, is more important that who or where you are.

In the context of religion...
People want to know what you are so they can either 1.) simply know more about you quickly, or 2.) determine if they should be for or against you. In the second case, these people believe their way is the only way and oppose you because you are different. Labeling has its purposes, of course, but it is often used to limit others intentionally. Avoid the fact that we're all humans, that person has a different belief system! Get him!
If you say you are also one of their religion, you may frequently be asked your stances on certain issues so that they can determine, once again, if they should be for or against you.
It is this "us vs. them" mentality that permeates so much of religion and even non-religious thought that puts us into conflict.

They don't need to have a name but many people take comfort in being associated with a certain group of people. Besides you will always be bothered by people whether you give your beliefs a name or not.

because many believe to know someone or something is to name it. There's no evidence it is true but that's what they think. They also wish to try to grasp at knowing things about you that you do not say. If you say you are a christian they assign a large number of values and interpretations on you in a most non consensual fashion.

So they came have some limited understanding. Few of us have our own beliefs though. Most people look for a bagged belief, all complete and tasteless.

It is necessary to differentiate between the different beliefs. If you tell someone you drive a car, that is a little vague. If you tell someone you drive a ford mustang, everyone knows what your talking about. Simple as that.

It's human nature to want to classify and categorize things, even people (e.g. White, Asian, poor, rich, nerd, jock, etc.). I don't know why but for some reason we have this need to put people into compartments. Don't get me wrong, sometimes this can be quite helpful but frequently it isn't. I wouldn't worry about it. Just do what you do and don't worry about other people, you can only control yourself.

I agree with that. Titles are so that other people can catagorise you eg. "this one's saved, that one's for the hot place......"
