It all depends on which restaurant you work at, each one has its own policy, there is no universal standard. The restaurant itself may be divided into sections, which a certain number of servers assigned to each section, or if the restaurant is small, then the entire seating area may be randomly assigned. It is not good business for the restaurant to have the servers running all over, so you will most likely be assigned to something like, smoking or non, and then those individual rooms/sections may be further divided. There is no standard, each restaurant is different.

Each server has particular tables assigned for the shift. At some places, if the assigned server is busy, someone else who isn't might bring water and menues.

Generally you will have your own section. Exceptions occur when another server is overwhelmed and you are'nt, then you can help out by taking a table or two from her/him.

Basically you are given a certain area to work in... sometimes if you are on break or a co worker is on break you may be asked to help but don't think about getting a tip...
