The "hold" that a car rental agency puts on your debit card is a hold on the deposit value og the rental agreement. It does not necessarily mean you cannot use your card to get cash, but it can put a hold on your daily limit. It is best to leave a credit card as a deposit or a cash deposit.

Yes, you can use your card, but what I'd do if I were you is check your bank's website to find out their policy on holds. Every bank is different. Some, like mine, don't even put a hold on for car rentals (and I've rented with Hertz quite a few times using the debit card (Visa Check Card) with no problems whatsoever).

Yes, they put a hold for the amount, but if you have more than that in your account, you can use it for the remainder. You're lucky you found a car rental place that will even take a debit card, a lot of them won't anymore.
