A lot of people think that garage bands like "Blue Cheer" were the first metal bands, but I believe it's Black Sabbath. Zeppelin might be the greatest rock band of all time but Black Sabbath defined the metal genre with their look, lyrics, and sound. Sabbath sounded different from everyone else because they "downtuned," because guitar player Tony Iommi was missing the tips of two of his fingers. By changing around his strings so he could press them agains the frets he brought that doom and gloom sound into rock and created heavy metal.
I love Zeppelin and you could make a case that songs like "Communication Breakdown" are metal proto-types, but stuff like "N.I.B." just screams metal. Lyrics about the devil, that guitar sound, and Ozzy's shrieks. That set the blueprint for metal for the next thirty years.

I'm not sure what "modern" metal is or sounds like anymore, having moved on to other genres years ago, but I can tell you that Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin were all highly influential . . . that Metallica was one of the first self-identified "metal" bands . . . and that virtually ALL of the 80's LA "hair" bands (Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison, etc) sounded like rehashed versions of Judas Priest's seminal "Hell Bent for Leather." :-)

well i rencently went to a seminar called heavy metal and the occult by jason mankey (who also does a led zepplin seminar) and it seems that black sabbath was "the" band that really started the heavy metal sound.
as far as modern metal's fathers, i would say any of the big metal bands of the 80's and 90's like maiden, metallica, ozzy, crue, megadeth, overkill, ac/dc etc etc
