It is offensive to hear and to name. I call them that all of the time! I REALLY hope they are offended.

It shouldn't be offensive, but because of the many outrageously fanatical things attributed to fundamentalism, it may have become tantamount to an insult. Certainly, the word "fundie" is not intended to be complimentary.
Don't forget, fundamentalism is not exclusive to Christianity. There are Muslim fundamentalists that we have had an opportunity to observe over the last few years. They are invariably the extremists who do the suicide bombings and many other acts of terror in the name of their god. Notice, fundies are usually offensive to the more moderate people of even their own faith, like Ali A, above me.

Fundamentalist is meant to be offensive. The word fundie is even worse. Atheists even can be a fundie so it makes no difference what religion you have.

Although I hate labels, I'm always pleased when people manage to be accurate in describing me, and I do not understand when people are not proud to stand up for what they are. It's the hate that's offensive, not the descriptions. Unfortunately the word fundamentalist has been conjoined with other terms that are unsavory to the point where Now it has connotations that it probably shouldn't. (kind of like, ".... yankee")

Your friend has issues. There's nothing even slightly offensive about being addressed as "fundie" or "fundamentalist".

Yes, the word is offensive. So are the fundies to whom it applies.

Yes.
It represents rigid thinking likened unto the lord of absolutes, one of the fallen. Considered by some to be the most evil of all the dark ones.

Its just as offensive as topography. Its what the person puts on the word, not the word itself.

The term has had a negative tag attached to it so I guess, if you were to be called that by some, the intent would be to offend you.

As it has a very negative connotation, it can be offensive to some, yes.
