Free will is not as free as it implies. We are conditioned by our environment and all thought as we know it was concocted by living people. The standard for living and even your question of free will is negated by the fact that we are here. The fact that we are born at all is motivated by external factors entirely out of our control. But even though we do not have will over these factors, what we do from day to day is determined by our choices: free will exists.
Asking why we're here or where we came from is similar to a man who is shot wanting to know who shot him before allowing others to give him medical attention. It doesn't really matter, everyone has room to improve the choices they make and realizing that is one of the steps on the path to nirvana.

Considering we don't even understand the concept of free will is until much later in life . . . .

I think your question is making a logical jump. We don't choose everything. While we may choose to smoke, we don't also chose to get cancer. No matter what any rabid anti-smoker says. We may commit suicide, but even then, some don't succeed. So, we don't necessarily always get to chose when we die either. We may choose to drive, but unless we are seeking some kind of retribution or pain, we do not chose to get into a car accident.

We do make **some** choices in life, but sometimes, life happens to us.

After you leave physical form, you'll find you did choose to be born. It'll make more sense then.
