Currently in the Marines. I joined for the pride and challenge and I love it. I've been in a while now and it has helped in many ways. I just finished my Bachelors in Psychology.

Former Navy 1985-1999.
I ENLISTED because I'd run out of tuition money and was a half-point shy on my GPA to get into the old NAVCAD (Naval Aviation Cadet) Program. A recruiter (ADC Gomez) suckered me into believing I could get a waiver for the GPA if I enlisted... and that I could refile my application right after recruit-training.
I picked the Navy (and Aviation) because I grew up just outside NAS Moffett Field and most of our neighbors were P-3C Orion pilots.
I ended up going through ENLISTED Aircrew Candidate School after boot-camp and flew as a sonar operator / rescue swimmer in the SH-60B Seahawk for 6 years. I finished my BA in History during my Instructor / Shore-tour, and then did a quick sea-tour as a ASWModule Analyst before being selected for the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) Program and being commissioned an Ensign.
I did 3 years as an LDO before my discharge for hearing loss.
Oh and to the "welfare" program "chuckle-head"... I had worked from age 16-23 in various jobs (life-guard, stage hand, set designer, secretary). When I left the Navy I had my BA and an MBA and went to work as an Operations Manager at a phone company.

Ex-Navy FC3(SW) Phalanx CIWS tech. 4 years and 2 months active duty from 1999 to 2003, with an early Honorable discharge for breach of contract on my command's side. In fact, I just finished my IRR duty this past March and am awaiting my final DD214.
I joined because I wanted to go out and see the world and get a bit more "cultured" than a lot of my High School buddies. Only 26, but I've already been to Portugal, England, Denmark, two places in Germany, two places in Norway, Lithuania, Poland, Holland, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and Columbia. Plus I've spent extended periods of time in Illinois (Basic, AECF, A School), Virginia (C School), Mississippi (Sea Duty), Florida (my boat spent a lot of time in Mayport for repairs), Alabama (Shipyards), and Puerto Rico (training exercises).
The college money and such was just an added bonus. My entire purpose for joining was to see portions of the world I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. And it was worth it.

I am in the army, and what got me to join was back in 2003, during the surge into Iraq, seeing all those tanks just head into baghdad on the news, I thought, I need to get in on that! And have been ever since!

not anymore, but was in the US Army for 13 years.
put on on a medical discharge after an injury, otherwise I would have stayed in for the full 20 or more.
REASON: I love my country
