My ex-boyfriend has been sentenced to life in prison, with possibility for parol in twenty years. He was 16 when he committed the crime that put him there, 21 when he was finally sentenced, and is 22 years old now. He and I are still friends, and he has another girlfriend right now who is his age. She loves him deeply, but has recently been asking herself the inevitable question, "Can I really waste 20 years of my life on this?" So, she came to me and has been struggling with the decision, asking for advice, and all around breaking her own heart over this.

So, I wanted to gather a few more opinions. Would you wait, get on with your life, or what?

The answers I'm getting on this are unfair. The guy isn't a bad person at all. He was in a bad situation, and he did what he felt he had to do to get out. That's really all the information I can give on that, but stop answering saying he's a scum-bag or dirt or whatever, when he's just a good guy who got stuck in a bad situation.

ok well i would say for her to move on, but i would still keep in touch. i mean he is in prison for a long time, and its not fair for him 2 ask her to wait because thats selfish. i had a boyfriend in prison and it just wont work til he gets out... i told him we are better off as friends for right now and everything is ok.

I love it ever since they got out of prison and their on the run and the ex-prison cop is in prison for murder. Its the best in a long time. After every episode it lives u wanting more. I'm glad they had a long wait cuz now there is gonna be a new episode every week.

I cannot grasp why anyone would fall in love with a convicted criminal, especially one sentenced to life. Your friend might be shocked to realize that there are a lot of decent guys out in the world who have never committed a crime. Move on and stop wasting time.

I would get on with my life, there is no guarantee that he will get parole in 20 years. That is a long time to stay faithful and not know for sure he will get out then. If he has life they could keep him for life. Does she really want to give up her life for him? They may love each other but, he did what he did to get put there and he has to know she will not wait that long.

She needs to get to with her life! I worked as a corrections officer for years and these relationships NEVER last! She is not going to wait 20 years for him! Men in prison end up trying to hold on to relationships so they have someone on the ouside to send them money to support them while in prison and they are VERY manipulative!! If she stays with him now, she is only going to waste a lot of time, money and be emotionally drained in the end! She needs to find someone that is not in prison and geton with her life and be with someone that abides by the law and can be there for her!

Aparently he did sometime really vile to get a sentence like that so why would you love anyone like that? And that is a waste of 20 years of your life on a piece of dirt. Besides he's married to his cellmate now and getting all the lovin' he needs.

I don't think you can have a relationship with someone who isn't there. It's a recipe for disaster. Of course it's only my opinion but I think that people who get involved in long-distance & otherwise impossible relationships secretly are afraid of relationships so they choose these pseudo or non-relationships because it's easier than having a real one. I think she has to search her soul to see what it is in her that would make her even contemplate wasting her life waiting for a convict.

Someone who committed something heinous enough to be sentenced to life in prison for isn't exactly someone you want to spend your life with anyway...
