Some of the reason Judo is dieing out is The BJJ people talking about how much better they are then it(which is true if we are talking about Olympic Judo) You can blame alot of it on the Gracie's. The funny thing is Kosen Judo and BJJ are really the same Art. There are only two difference. Judo works for throws and BJJ does more takedown like double Legs(if it helps you you can think like this Judo is Greco Roman Wrestling BJJ is Freestyle Wrestling)and the other is there stradagys on the ground. A Kosen Judoka will look for the Sweep first from his back and prefers the Butterfly Guard. The BJJ guy perfers the Closed guard and looks for the sub first(this is gerneral depending on the school you might do things alittle different.)
Some of the reason Judo is losing Popularaty in America and other places is the fact that to be straight with you Olympic Judoka's suck. They do no Leg Locks they work 70% on there throws and if it were up to them Judo would be thought of as a sport and not as a martial art. Not everyone is like that. ALso don't let anyone tell you BJJ is more complete then Judo. Judo and BJJ are in effect the same art. They teach almost the same things.

Judo is great but BJJ is a more complete system and is alot more popular, there are probably alot of people who do BJJ who did Judo before
Its only complete because Judo has become more a sport than anything and perhaps not as popular a sport as TKD, partly because to train TKD you just need a place with space, but for Judo you have to set mats and stuff before you even get people signing up to your classes so that makes Judo schools more rare
It unfortunate that Judo is a dying art but theres BJJ and Sambo and alot of other great arts which will teach Judo principals but have not been corrupted by sporting mentality

It never lost populartity globaly. But people of my generation probably never heard of it. I participate in it and I am a nikyu (2nd degree brown belt). If you ask your parents or grand parents it was popular because it was one of the most common martial art of the era. Especially after the war. Judo however is one of the few martial arts that is a competition sport during the olympics. It might pick up later but now ignorance is ruling. Many people just judge me because of my gi that I do karate. I hate when that happens. On two occasions I have had people come up to me at a supermarket and start doing these exagerated hand motions. And they made noises like Bruce Lee. Then I explain that I do judo and they are left with a blank expression and walk out of the store. it sucks that we are degraded because of ingnorance. Most ufc guys thank jujutsu only and other arts for there skills but they needed to learn some standing take downs from judo. I have never seen pure jujutsu fighters ever take down someone besides a leg pick. Hopefully it will get better in the future. Its my generation that should do that though. I have lots of years left to do that.

Judo is alive and well-it just does not receive as much attention as the other martial arts and in some ways it does not lend itself to all the flash or hyp that other martial arts do. On the other hand it is and has been a recognized Olympic sport-Tae Kwon Do was just a demonstration sport and never achieved full Olympic status. Judo is also and has been for many years recognized in the United States by the AAU; karate and other martial arts are not. The fact that Judoka continue to practice their art and compete at a high level inspite of this I think is actually a tribute to them and the type of sport that it is.

Judo or Udo in it's Korean dialect is a rock solid American Combat form. Mr. Mike Swain is America's Judo Champion and one hell of a Champion at that. Judo has so many great Americans from Gene Le Bell who defeated Milo Savage the boxer many years ago to Mr. Swain, BJJ is a product of Judo principles.
Judo is a major style, and was created from a style.

Just because Judo isn't fashionable these days in the US doesn't mean it's dead. Judo is thriving in the rest of the world.

Greetings:
Has it ever been popular? I've been practicing Judo for over 25 years and haven't noticed if it was ever been any marketing advertisement that helped.
I hardly ever heard anyone say Judo, friend.
Good Luck with your wondering.

Judo talk usually increases around Olympic time, as with Taekwondo. Both are Olympic sports.
