On a farm, I would suggest a medium sized dog. One of the most popular for farm work is the border collie. The border collie is also the dog that takes the most blue ribbons at the shows. Labradors are also excellent. Many mixed breeds prove out better than the registered breeds.

I had 12 acres in a small country town. I will tell you about the dogs I had while out in the boonies. I had a little collie mix that was always all over town, everyone knew her. She followed the kids to school. We got a call from my son’s teacher and said she brought the dog into the classroom because animal control was running around and asked if we could come and get the dog. Love small towns.
We had an Old English Sheep Dog. He was a great family dog. With his long hair covering his eyes he did not wonder, he could not see where he was going.
We had a Great Dane Irish Wolf Hound mix. She was 150 lbs and could look you in the eye while sitting next to you, great friendly dog.
OK, now I am going to go on to the best dogs I have ever had.
Right now I have a Beagle which will be great with the room you will have on the farm.
The best and most lovable and sweetest dog I have ever had is my APBT. If you are going for only one dog go for the Pit. You cannot find a more lovable or sweeter dog. If you want more then one consider a Beagle and an Old English Sheep Dog. They are all great.

Beagle hounds are good farm dogs, but they bark a lot (Ours are barking outside right now). If there is a humane society nearby, I would go and see what type of dog you like. Most dogs will adjust nicely to the surroundings. Labs are always fun and will run and play. Collies are good dogs for outside. Mutts can be some of the greatest dogs too. Look at a few different dogs, and go with your instincts on which would be best for you.

Go to your local dog shelter. By getting your dog from there you will be saving it's life. Tell the volunteers/employees there about your property and they will be able to help you find a perfect dog. They especially have a lot of hard to sell dogs that needs large spaces and wouldn't do well in small backyards, so they could have been cooped up there for over a year waiting for someone like you to come along :)

since you live in the countryside any kind of a dog will do but make sure the personality of the pooch u choose matches urs. If i owned a dog it would probably be a big bad st. Bernard or a great Dane to play with in the open outdoors.

Golden Retrievers and Border Collies are both awesome, beautiful dogs and extremely intelligent. Labradors are good dogs too, but I prefer golden retrievers over them because labs are slightly higher on the energy scale. But goldens and border collies both love the exercise and are very friendly (especially goldens) and easy to train, if you are looking for that.

I love my pit bull. She is great with the baby, loves people, loves to play.
Honestly I have never met a bad pit. The bred isn't bad its self it's people that make the bred bad.
But a good dog for a farm would be a working a dog.

If you plan to raise cattle then a cattle dog would be good. like a Aussie or a sheep dog. maybe a collie or lab would be good. depends what you want them for. if just for a pet just go to a shelter and test dogs to see which one would respond to you the best. a mutt is just as good a breded dog. so alot of dogs love to play. I have a Pomeranian and he loves to run. very smart dog too! So it just depends on what type of dog you want. test the dogs see which one would warm up to very easy and do Little training with the dog before picking which one you wanted. When i got my dog from a shelter. he stayed by us and you want a dog who wants to be around you.test them get book on breeds and see which one does the best for farm life. or go ogle breeds on the Internet. take you time and find the best one for you and your needs. you might be surprised to which dog will suit you. every dog has its own personality so it is up to you which one test alot of dogs at the shelter. don't rush in to the decision. play with them at the shelter get to know them and you will find the right one might take a couple of months to find one but you do it. it took us 3 dogs to find the right one. we had to learn the hard way but ifyou test the dog first it should make you choice easier. so find out what kind of test you can do with the dog in the shelter. like if they walk away and dont stay around you they wont make a good pet. if they want to stay around you and play they might make a good pet. just depends onwhat youwant from a dog.

take in to concideration the climate. Get an active breed because they will have room to run. Labs, collies, grey hounds, are all happier breeds if they have space. Congrats on your farm!!
