Global warming will affect us for thousands of years, at which point the warming cycle will complete and the cooling cycle will begin. This cooling cycle will last for thousands upon thousands of years, at which point a new warming cycle will begin.
Climate change is nothing new and there's nothing we can do to change it.
But if it will make you feel better, you might want to do a bit of research into how the "chicken little" scenarios, which are used to scare the sheep, are made.
They're absolute worst case scenarios based on the very far fringes of statistical probabilities. Even if the science involved is accurate ( which is HIGHLY questionable ) the odds of these doom and gloom scenerios actually taking place is pretty slim.

No one knows exactly when it will start to be a major factor in our lives. The best guesses are 20-40 years.
I care, because of you, since I won't likely be here then.
You shouldn't freak out. If we start to work on it now, we can reduce it to a level where we can deal with it. But we can't wait too long, it's like a big rock rolling downhill. Once it gets going fast, it will be very difficult to slow down.
Lots more about it here, with pictures:

i heard of this one crazy conspiracy theory which may not be that crazy after all, that the reason the middle eastern powers that be continue to sell oil (aside from the fact that we want it in the first place) is because the energy generated by oil contributes to global warming, and when global warming becomes uncontrollable, the polar caps will melt and middle east will have real snow in winter.lol

It already does affect us and will continue to for at least 10 generations or 200 years if we take action now. The only question is how much damage will be done in that time.

I read about this website on the Wall Street Journal: Carbon Diet Plan, which lists ways to improve one's ecological profile "and provides inspiration for your friends to do the same." I think together we can really make a difference.

It's going to be so gradual that it will be difficult to notice. Best guess is that it will be about 50 years before we see a change in ocean levels.
