Hi

Nalidixic acid works in two ways.

In low concentrations it works by stopping the growth of the bacteria (bacteriostatic).

In higher concentrations it works by breaking the cell wall of the bacteria, therefore killing the bacteria (bacteriacidal).

Nalidixic acid is no longer available in the United States as an antibiotic. If you are taking Nalidixic acid for any reason you should speak to your doctor about changing the antibiotic to a different one.

Nalidixic acid is the basis for quinolone antibiotics.

"Nalidixic acid is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In lower concentrations, it acts bacteriostatically (that is, it inhibits growth and reproduction). In higher concentrations, it is bactericidal, meaning that it kills bacteria instead of merely inhibiting their growth.

It is especially used in treating urinary tract infections."
