As far as Hinduism is concerned there is no bar marrying second time during the lifetime of first wife, but this prohibition comes under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Section 5 of the said Act clearly provides Condition for a Hindu Marriage. - A marriage may be solemnized between any two Hindus, if the following conditions are fulfilled, namely:
(i) neither party has a spouse living at the time of the marriage
Section 11 clearly provides Nullity of marriage and divorce- Void marriages.- Any marriage solemnized after the commencement of this Act shall be null and void and may, on a petition presented by either party thereto, against the other party be so declared by a decree of nullity if it contravenes any one of the conditions specified in clauses (i), (iv) and (v), Section 5.
section 17. clearly provides Punishment of Bigamy.- Any marriage between two Hindus solemnized after the commencement of this Act is void if at the date of such marriage either party had a husband or wife living; and the provisions of Sections 494 and 495 of the Indian Penal Code (45 of 1860) shall apply accordingly.
All in all the second marriage during the life time of the first wife is not only illegal, void but even punishable offence under section 494 of the Indian Penal Code, hence it is prohibited by Hindu law not Hinduism. One thing more for your information that complaint against such second marriage can be filed by the first wife only, but if she allows it to happen then no criminal case be filed by any one else against the bigamy committed by such a Hindu man, although the second marriage remains illegal & void in the eye of the law & such a second wife cannot enjoy the status that of a Hindu wife legally.

Marrying another while the present married spouse is present is not permissible under the Hindu Marriage Act - nothing to do with Hinduism - don't mix up laws with religion. Is your real question whether Hindus can have more than one wife (like a muslim)? Lawfully its not allowed. But there are instances from south India like in Tamil Nadu, where bigamy is pretty much institutionalised and even has a name - Chinna veedu, which translates as 'small house' or second home. It is an age-old tradition surviving to this day despite its illegality - the late MG Ramachandran, DMK chief Karunanidhi, actor Shivaji Ganesan etc. had two/three or more wives at the same time. You may have read in the newspaper some times back about engineer K Suryanarayana who was killed in Afganisthan that he had two wives (became public only after his murder in Afghanistan), Maybe the social sanction for two wives can be traced to religion and mythology as accepted in that part of India. For example, Lord Muruga had two wives. Whether this is good is a matter of debate. But as I mentioned before legally this is not acceptable. .

Marrying more than one was permitted once in Hindu caste., when women were more and men were less. After the Independence the Govt, formed set of rules that one man should marry only one wife., because so many complaints were there i.e., teasing the women, dowry cases , ill treatment of women folks. etc. In Rajaha's regime the one woman concept was not there and all the men started keeping many women as wives and keeps > Our country is a Hindu country and they have decided to change g and do something good to women folds. That is the reason marrying more than one was prohibited. Yours VRVRAO

Or most secular law.... doesn't make a lot of sense to have packs of sexually frustrated young males roaming around with zero sexual partners while the wealthy have more than their fair share, its called common sense.

it will make life more miserable by having more than one women in life. it is just not worth it. nobody would want to makt their lives miserable by having two or more women trying to control your lives or you have to constantly fend from them. make peace with yourself and if attol you want one life partner, stop with that. you can have many friends from the opposite sex, but sex should never be the intention. best to know women as a friend not a sexual partner. i

because it is a rule or law made by the ancient saints and so it has to be followed to maintain oneself in society and it will be not justice with the one whom u are marrying earlier
