One way to find out is to go to a dentist. :)

My wife had excruciating debilitating pain in her cheek due to a damaged nerve. The hard part was to get a correct diagnosis as it was mistaken to be a tooth problem for a long time. She was eventually referred to a neurologist who prescribed an anti-convusant, tegretol, for her condition. The tegretol has made life possible while the nerve heals.

She has been on it for a long time since she has other jaw issues that are being addressed and every time they fuss with the other issues, it exacerbates the damaged nerve.

I don't know if the dentist will be the right person to see, but perhaps he/she can refer you to a neurologist, who can prescribe the right medicine.

Good Luck.
