Can anyone help me understand car audio? I know nothing about it. Please refer me to anything you can, books, websites, etc. I need to understand what amps do, how they connect to the in dash unit, what does Ohms mean, RMS, watts, everything. How they work together......

well RMS stands for Root Mean Square, and is used to find the volts or watts of an amp. In audio it will be measured in watts. Watts, without going into too much detail, is a measurement of power. Basic rule of thumb is, the more watts an amp is capable of providing, the louder your music will be, assuming the speakers are capable of handling the wattage. amps connect to your receiver (or in-dash unit, as you called it) usually by a standard RCA audio cable. Keep in mind amps must also have a power supply, (usually connected directly to your battery terminal) and a ground wire, (usually bolted to your vehicles body somewhere.) Audio equipment is not that complicated, but if you still have problems I would agree with using a Haynes manual. also, they should give you at least some training for this kind of thing before turning you lose with customers.

car audio is a mine field, i can install speakers, subs, headunits e.t.c. have a look on car forums or even better haynes manuals they do a manual purely on car audio
