yes you can legally download it and install it, if you have the COA from the copy you lost. If the copy you lost is a retail copy, and you have the orange sticker that came with it, that's all you need. The problem come in finding a legit copy on the bittorrent sites such as btmon.com. pretty much all you are going to find are pirated copies that have been altered. the best suggestion is to find a friend with the same os as you are missing and borrow his disk. Keep in mind, Xp comes in 4 flavors, OEM home and proffesional, and retail home and professional. OEM is a copy that is installed by the manufacturer the certificate of authenticty, or COA (the numbers you need to activate) should be on a decal on the back or bottom of the computer. Retail, a copy bought in the store, has it's COA on an orange sticker in the package the disk came in. If you have a COA it doesn't matter if it's a different disk than the one you bought as long as it's the same flavor of xp. If the decal on the bottom of your computer says it had xp home on it, then you need the OEM windows XP home disk. a retail proffesional will not work.

It is located at Microsoft downloads. You cannot get it without the key (those letters and numbers in 5 sets of 5) that came with the disk you lost though. I always put all those numbers on a list and then if the disk does not work, or gets lost, you can always go and download a new copy for free. You tape the list to the back of your monitor (do not cover breathing holes that let air in) and then you never lose the list. XP is a lot cheaper now that Vista is being sold, so you will have to buy another copy. You can do that with a credit card at Microsoft downloads too. Everyone should use this download site as it has lots of free stuff that we all can use.

You have to go to Microsoft for that. This page on Microsoft's website tells you how to obtain a setup disc: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scratch what I just said. You used to be able to create a setup disc, but because of newer standards, booting needs a CD. I think since xp is a little older of an os, you can purchase a CD for under $100. However, if you are not willing to pay for your OS, then you should download a free version of the Linux OS (Ubuntu).

Unless you have the product key, you can't download it from Microsoft and reinstall it. Also, Microsoft will not support counterfeit versions of the software that are illegally downloaded.

You must purchase the software or upgrade it.

You cannot download Windows XP, it is sold on CD and copying it would be piracy. Buy a new CD. http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/
