I'm fully in favor of the death penalty, provided that the evidence in any particular case is airtight. Many innocent people have served life sentences, and likely been put to death because of a faulty case.

If anything, the process should be expedited. Once proven guilty, the person should be given 30 days to clean up their loose ends, say their goodbyes, and then be put to death. The appeals process is out of control, and many prisoners are nothing more than a burden to taxpayers.

As a re-incarnationist (if that is an actual word), I feel capital punishment is not punishment at all, but a premature release from the body, and the cancellation of the mess you've got yourself into. Far more punishing is having to live, confined, for a full normal life span without privileges or any hope of parole, knowing everything that goes on in the outside without having any contact with it.
Am I a mean old bastard?

I, as a Catholic, am against it in the United States. We have the capacity to incarcerate people for life. Therefore, we do not need to kill anyone. This is the explanation on capital punishment of the late Pope John Paul II.

the question is what do we try to achieve through punishment? do we try to get rid of the offenders and hide the failures of our society as a whole under the carpet? do we try to scare other potential offenders (doesnt work, more and more people are executed every year)? do we try to rehabilitate the offenders and teach them to re-integrate into society? can it be done for everyone or are some people lost cases?

I think the death penalty is an admission made by the state that it is incapable of creating a healthy stable society. furthermore... if a mistake was made and an innocent person was executed. is the judge a murderer or at least a man slaughterer through neglect?
and lastly: i wouldnt like my country to kill someone in my name unless it was in the heat of battle, to stop that person from killing others. once he's caught... shut him up for life, exile him to australia or the moon, or rehabilitate him. but dont kill him in my name, because that will make me a killer by proxy.

Buddhist with a mix of Hindu.......I am absolutely opposed to the death penalty. It is state sanctioned murder. We are the only Western country that still uses the death penalty as punishment. It tells just how far we've developed in terms of mentality. I also find electrocution and lethal injection hideous. I am a survivor of a violent crime and my cousin was murdered last year, her murderer is still unknown and I STILL don't agree with the death penalty.
I don't think it would matter if I was religious or not.

I think it's an easy way out. Instead of rotting away in a prison cell, they get the needle. I think it's too simple for someone that did something that they really should be punished for. Now, depending on your religious views, they could die and have eternal damnation, but they should still pay for the crimes they commited while they're here.

I'm for it. I am also for the long kind of punishments that someone else talked about. I think that they have it to nice in the prisons of the US. cable, Internet, college, they should just be put to work doing the things no one else wants to do. Say, maybe that would solve the worker shortage that brings people in illegally. Murderers to the meat packing industry, thieves to hoe corn fields, pedophiles to clean the sewers. I like it!

I do not believe in it. As an atheist, I think that life has value and shouldn't be squandered no matter who the person is. Life in prison is a suitable punishment for those who cannot be trusted, and for those that think life in prison costs more than execution, you should really look into the numbers. You'll be surprised at the findings.

Capital punishment is called for in Christianity only for those who take a life.

I am in favor of it. I do not believe in organized religion but I do think there is a higher power out there. I think we don't use enough capitol punishment. Rapists, murderers, people who commit crimes against children, I say we kill them all as soon as the guilty sentence is handed down. I mean honestly, what good are these people doing for society? Aboslutely nothing!! Why would we want these people to breed? I say down with them!
