Gas all the way.Gas is a much easier way to ontrl the direct heat when cooking. I am an avid cook and have used both cook tops. Electric take much longer to heat up and it can be hard adjusting the temperature precicily and quickly. Slightly more expensive, but worth it.

Hot Plate Stove

By hot plate do you mean an electric stove? I love electric, I grew up with one and spent most of my adult life with it. I cooked on a gas stove at my restaurant and it was always malfunctioning. We have a gas stove that came with our house and I hate it. The ceiling fan or an open window creates a breeze that makes the flames jump to one side of the pan so half is scorched, the other half raw. Or the flame just plain goes out! I find electric to be more reliable, I know exactly what number setting to put it on. Gas only has OFF and BURN.

I have a 25' seaworthy sailboat. I took out the original liquid alcohol two burner stove as I thought it would be too dangerous. To cook something I replaced it with a small microwave, a one burner propane camp stove and a BBQ unit which hangs off the aft pulpit. I generally use the microwave in the slip (with shore power) but use the BBQ and cook burner at anchor. On voyages I use two arge SS thermos' which will hold very hot water for 24 hours. Enroute, and solo, I use them to make instant noodle soup, tea and coffee. Enroute, I find I really don't eat all that much. Just water, soft drinks, tea, coffee. Small snacks can fill in the munchies. I generally have the MEAL of the day when finally snuggled down at anchor in a protected hidey hole. Throw a husk of corn on the BBQ, don't shuck it. Throw on a steak and while that's cookin', make a simple salad (lettuce and tomato), for example. You don't need a big menu as everything tastes good on the water!!!! Fair winds..... sloopy

I think the gas stove is better because you can cook more on a gas stove than an hot plate.

Gas stove!!!! It is amazing. I think the flavor after cooking on a gas stove is much better than a hot plate, not to mention it's just more fun to have this blue fire cooking all your meals for you. lol!!!!

I'm totally with Erin. Gas flames are instantly adjustable. The electric cooktop takes forever to heat up, then you have to lift and juggle the pan as it takes forever to cool down. I just bought a house with electric, and I'm replacing the stover asap!
