after injection of baytril and steroid, and having muzzle swell up and now resolved since ER visit, we are supposed to administer Baytril eardrops until return visit tomorrow. Afraid to give drops because of yesterday's reaction but afraid to have him without medication for a day. We live in an area where the local vets are not "on call" on weekends. Any home remedy antibiotic drops that anyone knows of that is safe and effective?

Follow your vets advice. The steroid injection is an anti-inflammatory, so there should be no more swelling. And yes, there IS Baytril ear drops.

If it concerns you then discontinue the drops. One day is not going hurt... Was is a reaction to the Baytril? I would just clean the ears well. and keep them dry until you can speak directly with your vet. Home remedies are scary as they can sometimes make the infection alot worse! please dont use them. Just wait. Nobody knows here on yahoo what the slide showed and what type of infection your pooch has... Like I said it wont hurt if your concerned to wait it out until tommorow.... smile... good luck

Edit: yes i have seen Baytril in a eardrop form..smile
also when cleaning the ears NEVER go farther than the cotton on a Q-tip.. as YES you can rupture the eardrom... I have heard most vets shy away from telling people to use Q-tips and just use gauze as your finger can not hurt your dogs eardrums... use a good cleaning solutin. Rubbing alchohol ma irritate it and if it has and open sores it will HURT so your dog may get quite upset... GOOD LUCK!!

You can hit eardrums with a q-tip, they're plenty long enough!!

Did you not ask this question of the emergency vets? If not, pick up the phone and give them a call now. I would think they would advise not using any more Baytril in case this is what he had a reaction to.

I would not use anything until you can speak to a vet. An ear infection should not cause anything terrible to happen in a day, but use of Baytril (usually safe, but animals can have allergic reactions to anything) or 'home remedies' might.

By the way, I've never heard of Baytril coming in an ear drop form - you might want to ask your vet why they're not using an actual antibiotic ear drop preparation??

q-tip swab dipped in alcohol. dont worry you can't hit their ear drums, they are too far down!
