It could be a whole host of skin conditions -- mange, mites, etc. I would take her to the vets ASAP. Skin conditions only get worse if left untreated.

First, the shedding is normal this time of year, because they're getting their summer coats. I sweep every Saturday, and in my dust pan is enough hair to build another dog - literally.
Your dog may have allergies; they tend to get them in the spring/summer months. I know mine does, and the vet told me to give her 50 milligrams of Benadryl a day. It's helped curb her itching, although I still catch her eating away at herself from time to time.
If you start to see a lot of bald spots and sores, you really should take her to the vet. It could be mange (but probably isn't). You should just monitor her closely, and assess her condition. If it's getting out of hand, see a professional.
Also, make sure her collar is not too tight. You should be able to stick your forefinger under it COMFORTABLY (the collar shouldn't cut off the circulation in your finger when you stick it under there.) Good luck!

There are several things that could be happening.
Your dog could be suffering a severe allergic reaction, to fleas or even to her food. If the fleas are a problem, you should be able to find Frontline or a similar product and keep her flea-free. If it's the food, try changing to something with fewer synthetic additives: That's what my mother had to do for her beagle, who was having trouble with redness in his eyes, a rash, and itching ears.
Or she could have picked up some skin condition. In which case she needs to see a vet.
Good luck!

You need to see a vet. There are MANY reasons this could happen and no one can diagnose a health issue over the internet. It could be food allergies, mange or any of several other possible health issues.

My dog gets these patches from time to time. Usually during the summer when she lays on the patio in the garden. The vet advised me they were pressure sores and were not hurting her. Its just where she lays down on a hard surface!! I put savlon on them and they go after a couple of days.
