It was a particular worship of Shiva; that to get blessing from Shiva; Vishnu have to worship him by 1000 Lotus Flowers.

To test Vishnu`s determination Shiva hides one lotus from the basket(?).

When 999 flowers had been offered Vishnu understood that Shiva is playing tricks with him.

Immediately Vishnu plucked His eyes and offered to the lotus feet of Shiva because, Vishnu`s devotees always used to call him "ARAVINDAKSHA" i.e. "Lotus eyed one"

This is wonderful Puranik story to teach us the importance of determination in worshipping.

Mongo has given the story as told in mythology but actually we need to understand the deep meaning in it. When they say Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are all Gods and are equal why one worships another?

Here Lord Vishnu or Water is worshiping Shiva or Nature and Vishnu offers one eye to Shiva to complete the Yagnya he is performing. So, what is Water offering to Nature. I feel it shows that nature and water are both important and water cycle which takes place due to forests and so water is offering one of its part to nature so that it grows and sustains well.

And, for spritual and other meanings I hope many here will be giving them.
