Now, I'm not trying to advocate bad behavior for atheists, but...

Why do some of you, when criticized about being unforgiving, judgmental, and generally unChristian, criticize atheists in turn? Do you not realize that atheists do not adhere to the Bible as you do? Why do you think they would be bound by the same rules?

When you respond to criticism with, "Well, you're just as bad," you're only making yourselves seem worse. That is not the "Jesus approach," so to speak, nor is it any sort of justification for behavior.

And there's a good point...

What another does should not be justification for what you do, regardless of whether you are Christian or not. However, when Christianity is added to the equation, are you not supposed to be the ones who bring truth and light and love and healing? How can you accomplish this when you engage in the same game you believe the atheists are playing?

This is not level ground. You are supposed to be the exception, not the rule.

MamaBear: And that is what we call a strawman argument. You set up atheists to fail. That is not their main reason for condemning Christianity and other religions.

It is the lack of evidence for the existence of God. The contradictions in holy texts do not help much, either.

No atheist will claim that he is perfect, nor that anyone else is. But religion, which has often gotten involved in power, can be a truly terrible thing.

I believe you have SERIOUSLY misunderstood atheists.

MamaBear: Okay, but... two things.

1.) This isn't really what I'm asking in my question, and
2.) Demolishing one weak argument from the other side (that I never see used by real thinkers) does not mean that the other side's other points are illegitimate.

Re-read my question. It may or may not apply to you. What I'm really "attacking" has to do with morality. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

To a real Christian, judgment should be rejected and love should be accepted. Many atheists accuse Christians of not having these principles, but then many Christians respond with, "Neither do you!" That does not take the blame off of Christians, nor does it matter to the atheists anyway. They don't necessarily claim to abide by these rules, but the Bible says that Christians should.

wadkinsjames: I like your ideas. Very Buddhist (I know, another label), I think.

However, it doesn't really answer the question, and I don't think you're guilty of it yourself, based on the way you responded. I'm essentially asking why Christians, who tote the Bible around as as the one true text and the source of all wisdom and goodness, treat atheists the same way atheists treat them, then call it justified.

Greetings Friend,

To answer your question I would like to share with you a vision I had during a time of meditation. As I sat there, I began to float through the clouds. The clouds were dark, rain type clouds. I could feel their wetness as they would slid pass my cheeks as I continued to rise. I had a sense of all the anger and hurt I had experienced in my life and a sense of all the people I blamed that anger and hurt on.

However, the more I rose, the more peaceful and full of love I became, until I found myself passed those clouds and surrounded by the sunlight and totally immersed in God's presence. I was so full of joy.

Suddenly, I was surrounded by all those people I thought had hurt me and for a moment I remembered my anger and hurt toward them. But, it only lasted a moment because in God's presence one cannot stay anger or hurt. I totally forgave all of those people. We laughted, cried, and hugged. Then the thought occured to me, God what would you have me do? God said, "Teach." "Teach? How?" I replied. God said, "Do you remember all the pain you felt as you came through the clouds, but once you entered into my presence all the pain was gone and you forgave everyone of everything? Nothing more than that is required." Okay God how? "Bring My presence with you where you go and you will bring healing to all that you meet."

I know you may be wondering how this answers your questions, so I will be plain. Beloved, it does not matter what we call ourselves: Christian, Buddhist, Atheist, etc. until we learn to see the truth of who we are, our actions will not be correct because they are based on a false concept of who we think we are and we will act, or behave, in accordance with that self concept. When we see who we are, we will bring God's presence with us where ever we go and healing will be there as well. This is all that is needed.

sending love,

I cannot answer for others, only for myself (obviously). But there is a REASON I have chosen to point out the bad behaviour (and history) of certain athiests.

It is this: certain athiestic people attack the very idea of theists (not merely Christians) and their beliefs as fraudulent, on the basis that there were monsters claiming to hold certain beliefs, who did horrible things. The arguement is: your beliefs are obviously null and void, for they created "Monster X", who committed crimes against humanity. Similiar monsters can be found in other belief systems, all such beliefs are therefore null and void!

Now, if the above statement is true, then the obvious way to test it is to look at the accuser's own belief system (in this case, athiesm), which he is obviously proposing as superiour. If his belief system (or lack thereof) is truely superiour, then we will find NO MONSTERS.

That is why some people (theists) take the time to point out the faults of some atheists. They are eliminating a popular atheistic arguement, as part of a defense of their faith.

Breakdown in this debate is:

Athiest: Theism is a crock; look at the monstrous individuals who were true believers of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Wicca, Zoroaster... If any religion was really true, these people could not do these crimes! The presence of one or more criminal individual(s), claiming to hold a certain philosophy, nullified the supposed goodness of that philosophy, and therefore the philosophy itself.

Theist: What do you propose?

Athiest: Abandon illogical theism for atheism, and use your ^&*^(*& minds, you idiots! Don't follow any theistic garbage, lest you become a monster too!

Theist: I have a problem with your logic.

Athiest: You actually know that word??? Oh, ok, what is the problem?

Theist: If the test of the veracity of any belief is the presence or absence of criminal individuals claiming that faith, then surely we can apply that same test to the philosophy of atheism. Fair enough?

Atheist: Yesss, so?

Theist: some infamous atheists include: Mao Tse Dong, Stalin, Ho Chi Min, Lenin (etc.), also guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity...

Atheist: (sputters) Those were political actions, done by despots, they have no bearing on the validity of atheism as a philosophy...

Theist: YOU set the standard. "The presence of one or more criminal individuals, claiming to hold a certain philosophy, nullifies the supposed goodness of that philosophy, and therefore the philosophy itself." Atheists have committed crimes against humanity also, therefore Atheism is also void as a valid philosophy.

Atheist: sputters...

4. Yes. Religion is sacrilegious. Individual spirituality is the only true honesty. 3. Actually, Killing is highly forbidden in the Islamic Muslim faith. 2. In percentages, hard to say or even guess. 1. There has been some evidence of this. Mostly through immigration and high birth rate. Very few are conforming from one religion to Islam.

Is this a question, or a sermon? :)

I can't speak for everyone - on a personal level, I do try to accord each question a serious and well-thought-out answer. I agree that God doesn't want us to judge others - that's His job. Mocking or degrading others' beliefs (or lack thereof) is certainly not going to get anyone to adopt my point of view or to see me as a shining example of religious tolerance.

I agree with you completely :)

That's like people telling me that I'm going to go to hell.

My response: "... Um. Alright. That's lovely. Have a nice day, too."

You have to laugh when they expect that statement about going to hell to scare you, when you don't even believe in hell. It never ceases to amuse me :)
