Hiccups are usually harmless. However, in rare cases they can last for days, making it difficult to eat or sleep. If this occurs, see a doctor: a serious condition may be the cause.
Many homespun hiccup "cures" may have some merit. Holding one's breath or breathing into a paper bag prompts the diaphragm to contract more deeply in order to bring in more oxygen, which may interrupt the spasms. So may taking a sudden deep breath as if startled.
There are some easy herbal cures listed below. Feel better!

Hiccups are caused by your diaphragm [ a large muscle under your lungs] going into spasm.
I have found that if you used very controlled and very deep breathing to overtake this muslce, then it releases the spasm and the hiccups stop.
Works for me every time....good luck.

My son had hiccups for 3 week! He tried everything-drinking water upside down, sneezing, asking someone to scare him, hold his breath, taking a cold shower, jumping into a cold lake....nothing worked. He finally went to the doctor. He was prescribed Valium and that did the trick after one day!

My favorite cure is to stand with your feet closely together. Raise your arms very high above your head palm-to-palm. Really stretch as far as you can so as to realign the diaphragm. Then, while holding your breath, slowly, slowly lower your arms down to your sides. Now your hiccups should be gone.

The purpose of holding your breath, breathing into a paper bag or drinking water is for your body to produce more CO2. Me experience is take a deep breath and hold it then exhale a lil bit and breath a lil bit and hold your breath again.
