My husband, who is 58, has had good check ups but is worried he will die soon - or atleast before or shortly after he retires at 62. He is about 30+lbs overweight. But other wise healthy, although he does not exercise.

Yes. you can have atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) without ateriosclerosis (blockage of the arteries). you can have a weakness in the vessels that may lead them to "balloon" or rupture. Both are causes of stroke and other serious health issues.

Here is a question, why is he worried about living long enough to retire when he should be worried about living after he retires? - believe me, thats when most people feel they have the opprotunity for the first time in thier lives to do what they want - so tell him to make some changes in his diet, and go for a half hour walk every day.

That way he will be around long enough to enjoy his retirement, not just earn it.

Be well.

There are 9 risk factors for heart disease: age (+65), gender (male), heredity (including race), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity.

It sounds like he is at low risk. If he is concerned about it he might consider exercising. A 15 - 20 min walk 5 times a week will greatly benefit his health.

First thing he need to do is to - NOT think that he'll die soon -
This negative thinking will eventually result into something more serious. He may be overweight like you said but he is healthy and is keeping his cholesterol count in minimum..he should be fine. And as long as he keeps a HEALTHY diet, exercise ( indoor or outdoor is fine) , and he sees his Doctor regularly, and he doesn't smoke or drink, and he should keep a positive outlook in life....he should be fine. Always ask and refer to what his Physician recommend...I hope this help.. A positive outlook in life will definitely help him mentally..emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

In my opinion your husband is more worried about his retirement, due to this he is feeling insecure, resulting in depressive anxiety state, as they think it is the end of the world.
All that you have to do is reassure him, or have him counseled.
Now if their other family commitment/s they will be fulfilled with passage of time.
Stress of this type do usually result in acute massive infarction and other complications.I am sorry to write this but it's a crude fact of life.

Tell him to keep busy.OK, now most depends on you.

We're all vulnerable to heart attacks and strokes no matter what. Good blood pressure and cholestorol keeps the risk lower, however.

yes, heart attacks are sometimes completely random just like cancer, although if you have bad cholesterols and is overweight, thats just like smoking and lung cancer. Some people are overweight and have bad cholesterols, but they never get a heart attack, and some people who are perficaly healthy, randomly gets one (although the chance of it is very small, like i said, same as a person getting lung cancer who doesn't smoke)
