Don't have too many kids; keep it short (2 hrs. or less); have easy to eat healthy snacks handy.
A theme can help with food and games -- what is something the birthday child enjoys?
Activities can include sidewalk chalk, bubbles, playdoh or finger paint, sandbox play or water play, music (they can even make their own instruments!) Bean Bag toss, relay races. Look at activities for preschoolers;

The main key is to not overdo -- have adult supervision, but allow the kids to make their own fun.
One more thing -- don't open gifts at the party. That is a total fun killer and makes keeping track of thank yous very difficult. You also get around the honesty of "I don't like that/I already have that."
Enjoy!

Remember KIS -- Keep It Simple!
You do not have to have an elaborate super involved party in order to call it a success.
As long as there are activities or short games to keep the party guests entertained, and something to eat (maybe only cake and Ice cream). You may want to include a small party favor as a parting gift. This is usually a good idea if you are opening presents at the party. It helps the kids feel like they are all getting something. This does not need to be a Hollywood gift basket! Try finding party favors at the 99 cent store or somewhere like that. Remember who you are having the party for and keep it appropriate to the age.
If you have a number of activities plan to keep a schedule and keep it moving. If you do not keep a schedule you will plan certain things that have cost you time and money that will be lost or rolled over if not scheduled. Having said that remember to be flexible. If something is not working do not feel like you have to get to the bloody end of the game or what ever just to say you did it. If it is not working... just move on.
Above all have fun!

Keep your party simple...6-8 kids. If it is an outside party you can do so many things like bubbles, pinatas, sandboxes, swings, small crafts. I went to a party recently and they had bought the foam visors and door hangers and a bunch of foam stick-ons such as flowers, sports balls, etc. and let the children make their own. Also, keep the food simple. I used to order pizza for my young children, but realized that making a bunch of finger sandwiches such as pb&j, turkey and ham went over great! Kids this age also love cupcakes. They all get the same amount and won't fight over who is getting more frosting or decorations than the next kid! Kids this age don't expect a lot. They just enjoy being with kids their own age!

Keep it short, for one. Try to have it outside where they can run around or you'll go crazy! Have something for everyone like prizes or they will all cry when they don't get a present. Bubbles are fun, sidewalk chalk, painting. Keep them busy or they will act up. Don't give them too much sugar, juice is better than pop. Have some parent helpers. Keep it simple with easy games to play and keep the Tylenol handy!!!

Have a few games planned, but sometimes they just like playing around together like outside or on a playground. Just keep everything simple. Put together little gift bags with trinkets and stuff. Good luck!

get a bunch of tables and chairs for outside, a bouncy house (kids LOVE those things), simple finger foods to make....maybe like some meatballs and cocktail sausages in a bbq sauce(thats a hit in louisiana), mac and cheese(a kids fav.), pretzels, cheetos, fried chicken, then the cake and icecream for desert...let the kids run around and have a blast!

Invite your family and have Birthday Cake, that way your child grows up to respect the meaning of family time.
