I think its more about knowledge than it being more common. There are a lot of people out there that are carriers of HPV and don't know it. They probably have been for a long time too. Testing has lead to more education and awareness about the fact that ceratin strains of HPV can lead to cervical cancer and that a simple pap test for women is not 100% accurate.

Its way more common. Its highly contagious. Did you know it can be transmitted orally as well as just rubbing parts together? That makes it almost as contagious as a common cold!
