I meant registry defragmenter as well. I don't mean disk defragmenter.

For MOST people and purposes, the disk cleaner and defragmenter that comes with Windows will do. Double-click My Computer, then right-click on C: (or whatever your hard drive is designated). On the General tab, choose disk cleaner; on the Tools tab, choose Defragment.

Windows' cleaner won't clean your registry, which can be a tricky thing to do. Be careful with any products that will do that.

Ccleaner is a fine cleaner that will do more than Windows' disk cleaner. Ccleaner will clean your registry (use "issues" in Ccleaner).

I don't know of a free defragmenter, but many offer a trial period free; diskkeeper is one, I tried it, it is OK but not enough better than Windows' defragmenter (in my circumstances) to get me to pay for it.

For the registry ccleaner, free at ccleaner.com This cleans the cache, and then fixes any problems with the registry

The Disk Cleanup and Defrag that is on your Operating System is really the best.
Go to Start, Acsessories, System tools.
The other thing I suggest is run Spybot Search and Destroy, and Lavasoft's Adaware Removal. (Free, or Shareware)

Try http://www.diskeeper.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp? for Diskeeper Lite

And http://www.ccleaner.com/update/?v=1.38.485&l=1033 for CCleaner I use this myself and it regularly shifts megabytes of temp files.
