Smoking is associated with an increased overall morbidity and mortality. This was recognized early in the era of industrialized cigarette production and mass use. In the 1950s there were already reports linking cigarette smoking with the fast rise in the rate of lung cancer. Today knowledge of the deleterious health consequences of smoking is widely recognized, but smoking remains the number one cause of preventable death in developed countries.

Among smokers age 35 to 69 smoking accounts for a three fold increase in the death rate, and approximately half of all regular smokers that begin smoking during adolescence will be killed by tobacco.
In 2005 it was estimated that more than one in every six deaths in the USA was the result of smoking.
Smokers have more acute and chronic illnesses than never smokers, more bed disability days, and miss more school and work days .
Smokers make greater use of inpatient and outpatient hospital services and lower use of preventive care services.
Of all cancer deaths in the USA, 30% could be prevented if cigarette smoking was eliminated. Not just lung cancer!

Well, everyone knows that smoking causes numerous health problems, but I do not think tat it is as bad for you as everyone makes it out to be. For example, "everyone who smokes will get lung cancer and die." Obviously that is not true. I'm not saying that if you smoke you won't get lung cancer, but I am saying that just because you smoke, doesn't mean that you are definitely going to die of cancer.

If cigarettes are something that you enjoy, I say go ahead and enjoy them!

Everywhere you turn, including the ciggy packages themselves, answers your question. I find it hard to believe you don't know the answer to this, but put it in "respiratory diseases".

Do some research online if you are truly unsure about it. The information you find there will have more meaning than opinions of people here.

In NYC a pack of cigarette cost $7.00. Let's see, a pack and a half a day is $10.50. That's $315 a month. That's bad.

yes. smoking is a predisposing factor to lots of diseases, especially cancer and respiratory diseases.

and by respiratory diseases, i mean tuberculosis, emphysema, bronchitis... and the list goes on. smoking can weaken your immune system and these diseases can easily get to you.

and if you have diabetes or venous diseases, it also doesn't help.

smoking also causes acidity.
