I'm from Texas, USA so the means of measure (the numbers) is different from what I am used to seeing. However, I searched "High Cholesterol in the UK". I found one site that explains a good deal about it along with levels that are generally regarded as desirable. They are:

- Total cholesterol (TC) - 5.0 mmol/l or less. However, about 2 in 3 adults in the UK have a total cholesterol level of 5.0 mmol/l or above.
- Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol after an overnight fast: 3.0 mmol/l or less.
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol: 1.2 mmol/l or more.
- TC/HDL ratio: 4.5 or less. That is, your total cholesterol divided by your HDL cholesterol. This reflects the fact that for any given total cholesterol level, the more HDL, the better.

Information on assessing (calculating) your cardiovascular health risk is included.

Good Luck,
Terry

You may find several different answers for this question!

The current guidlines keep changing, and many years ago it was fine to have a cholesterol below 6.5! However, these days, the conventional answer is very different and more complex.

If there is no personal or family history of heart or cardiovascular problems or diabetes, then below 6 would probably be OK, whereas if any other factors are present, then levels below 5.5 or even as low as below 4.5 might be advised. You also need to differentiate between the 'good' fats and the 'bad' fats in your cholesterol result.

If you are concerned, talk to your doctor or your practice nurse, but don't forget that herbal and other natural approaches can be extremely effective in lowering cholesterol levels.

Most of the cholesterol test report the values in a different way. 200 is the upper limit of the normal range as per that. So, ask them to interpret it and ask for the normal range.

5.4 is not alarmingly high but your doctor may be looking for other results in your blood test such as HDL. LDL & the cholesterol to HDL ratio. If your doctor is concerned with any of the above he/she may prescribe you a Statin. In the meantime cut down on the amount of saturates, animal fats that you eat

I suffer from a heart condition and I have been told to keep it below 5 but now there is now evident's that this is still to high. See your G.P. and ask for some tablets which are from the statins group of medicines to reduce your level.

A little on the high side, but if they really felt you needed to cut it they would put you on a STATIN drug. Apparently 2/3 of the UK is on these!

Its slightly high, doctors usually like it below 5...some prefer it to be nearer 4.5.
I have a level of 3.3 which my doctor is very pleased with (smug mode!) lol

Everything under 5.2 is fine, yours is a little high. I would not worry too much about it!
