What can we do to get people to stop beleiving the myths that sugar alone causes Diabetes? It seems where ever I go a lot of people still hang onto the myth that sugar or eating something sweet causes Diabetes. These myths are not true even where I live the myths about Diabetes are still beleived.

Maybe we could call Mythbusters?
Just kidding. I don't think there is any way we can stop it. The internet if full of incorrect information but people will read it and believe it.
It's unfortunate that these myths are out there. The only thing we can really do is emphasize that these ARE myths and explain how diabetes evolves. We have to stay updated on the latest information and statistics.
Good luck

Unfortunately, the only way to stop it is education, and many people don't want to listen to the truth, or choose not to believe it. A lot of it is pure ignorance, though--they believe what they were told when they were young, and since people they trusted told it to them, it must be true, even if we've learned so much more. My own father still believes some of the myths, and he IS diabetic--he thinks that since he takes insulin, if he eats a candy bar, he can just take more insulin and be fine. And even though my diabetes is diet-controlled, he's tried to tell me that since he's on insulin, I will be eventually, too.

Continue to spread the truth. I tell people every chance I get and back it up with science. Check it out:
http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html
I have answered nearly 7,000 questions on this forum... many of them in the diabetes category. I don't hesitate to tell the short story of my mother who was diagnosed in 1966 with type 2. She struggled and struggled. The doctor told her it was the candy she ate. (she didn't eat that much). So, I quit putting sugar on my cereal, cut way back on the sweets, and became diabetic despite my avoidance of sugar. Now, I know better and will proclaim what I know to anyone who will listen. SUGAR MOST DEFINITELY DOES NOT CAUSE DIABETES. There's far more scientific evidence to support the hypothesis that certain fats have more to do with insulin resistance (the precursor to type 2) than any other type of food. Anyone who wants to debate me on this is welcome... just be warned that you better have plenty of facts on hand.

As I said before, I think people hang on to this so that they can believe that they are in control of their own destiny and prevent themselves from getting diabetes.
Aside: Yeah that site is alive and well under a different poster. At least I still have something to do when I can't sleep.

There is often ignorance and misunderstanding.with diabetes. People who don't have diabetes sometimes think they know but they truly don't.

Myths are hard to eradicate because some of it are culture bound. One thing we can do is to educate people about it.

Educate yourself rather than listening to what others tell you.
