Hello,
Great question you have here...
As a nurse I would love to answer for you:
Years ago a BP of 120-130 over 80-90 was acceptable. However new research has shown this is not true. The NEW guidelines for a healthy BP are less than 120 over less than 80.
1) most important is exercise!!! it is beneficial for your body for many reasons.... but especially good because it helps to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system and will lower your BP.
2) as you said in your question, avoiding foods with high sodium (salt) is key... aged meats, hotdogs, canned soups, canned vegetables, soda/pop, junk foods like chips, condiments, and frozen dinners are the biggest culprits. Try to cut those out entirely. Also avoid adding table salt to your foods. Eventually you will not even miss the taste.
3) eat more healthy foods such as vegetables... and new research has shown these are the best foods for cardiovascular health : Garlic, Onions, Pomegranite juice, Kiwi fruit, fish such as salmon and tuna, and nuts such as walnuts and almonds.
4) relaxation, meditation, and deep breathing... avoid stress!!! Studies have proved that stress can weaken the body's defenses making us prone to many diseases... Also having a "type A" personality is a risk factor in developing cardiovascular disease... These are the people who's mindset is always Work, work, work!!! Schedules, Perfection, and Acheivement! Try to relax and realize that the world wont end if you say NO to a project once in a while.
Hope these tips help you,
Good Luck,
Angie R.N.

Moderate exercise that involves repetition rather than weight training. Walking, swimming, bike riding. Meditation- you can get books and tapes at your local library. Do not let yourself become dehydrated. Be careful of over the counter medications- some of them have warnings about blood pressure.
Avoid- salt! Read labels, the sodium content of foods and beverages can be surprising! Especially low fat or diet foods- they raise the sodium to help with the taste.
Avoid stress! Anger also raises blood pressure- say your piece and let it go!
Watch comedies! Laughter releases endorphins which are "feel good" chemicals in the body and they lower blood pressure!
Find a talisman- a saying, prayer, worry stone, friend or anything that can be instantly called upon to sooth you when you are troubled, frightened, angry or extremely happy!
You can google diet and nutrition for high blood pressure to find some menu examples.
And follow the doctors suggestions! If you are uncomfortable with what he/she is telling you to do, get a second opinion.
Live long, laugh much!

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

1. Avoid the following:
- Smoking
- Stresses (things that anger, excite, agitate, etc.)
- Caffeine
2. Things to do:
- if you are overweight like me, start a plan to lose down to your ideal weight or Body Mass Index (BMI) if you prefere. You don't have to lose it all this week or even next month, but make progress.
- Exercise regularly (cardio- at least 20-30 min/day) (make sure your doctor approves of any exercise plan before you begin)
- as you said eat a low sodium diet
- Eat low fat
- Eat low cholesterol
- Eat high fiber
- Limit your daily alcohol intake — one drink for women and two for men
- Practice slow deep breathing severa times a day
- Set aside some quiet time every day. Spend 1/2 to 1 hour listening to soft gentle music or a nature sounds CD or device. Just clear your mind and relax. This is good for your BP as well as your mental health.
- Quit getting older (BP typically increases with age) It's true but why kill yourself to keep your BP low.

Exercise. The human body was meant to be active. Exercise strengthens the heart muscle, improves blood flow, reduces high blood pressure, raises HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol), and helps control blood sugars and body weight.
Try to avoid all processed foods like prepackaged tv dinners, canned foods which contain a lot of sodium (many canned foods and prepackaged foods are loaded with sodium to preserve freshness). Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, chicken, fish, etc. Try to avoid red meat. Try to avoid stress.

EXERCISE!EXERCISE! The best way to maintain lower blood pressure. Also , a diet as you alluded to in your question: low salt. Eat healthy and get plenty of sleep. An occasional glass of red wine would'nt hurt things either.

My mom and dad both had high blood pressure. They starting consuming mass amounts of garlic, (chop a clove of garlic, put it in a glass of water, and add a little honey to it) They both stunk to high heavens, but their bp went down. Do some garlic research, maybe you can find a better smelling way to get you garlic on.
