I am thinking of hosting a murder mystery. Has anyone hosted a murder mystery party? if so, did you buy a kit (which one if you did) or did you write one yourself. Tips would be greatly appreciated

There are lots of kits you can buy - both in the stores and online. (I prefer the online ones, they are much more flexible and you can invite lots and lots and lots of friends to them.)

You could write one yourself... but to be honest it's an awful lot of work and will take you many hours. And even then you run the risk that it doesn't quite work In my opinion you're better off buying a kit as you know that has been tried and tested.

My main tips are: Give yourself plenty of time, get any help that you can (ie, if someone can help you with food and drink, so much the better), and choose a party with a theme that you really like.

We have done almost every Murder game on the market, they are really addicting! 'How to host a Murder" games are by far the best. Everyone gets an invite with descriptions of the roles and clothing ideas. It even has dinner ideas and recipes! We've done 6 course meals with 'servants' and sitting around the pool with pizza, they are all fun! If you don't have roles for everyone you'd like to invite, just make one up, they just won't be a suspect, but they get to join in all the fun! Our friends daughters grew up being our 'servers', they started at the ripe age of 6 and did it till they were teens! They didn't really play, just made sure the cooking was going well and served and cleared dishes. Naturally they had 'names' fitting each murder, I think their favorites were 'Maid Enform' and the 'Butler Diddit'. However you end up doing it, you'll have a great time!!!
Good Luck!

i had one a few months back, as a matter of fact. i bought a kit at barnes and nobles for under $10. (one of those small box kits near the check out line) and followed their instructions. the big thing that makes it go smoothly is to read the product the whole way through before planning your meal, make sure you have enough courses to cover the span of the game and have little props that will help guests get into character (wigs, hats, props, etc).

also, i chose to send each guest/character a little write up on who they're playing inside their invitation. i even had some people come dressed for the part. we had a great time. be sure to take lots of pics.

Buy the packaged kit. It has the game, menu and a short bio. of each character. It even includes the invitations. The one I did ( many years ago ) had a diner / rock and roll theme. It could not have been more fun.
