It is possible you are spiking, perhaps while you sleep. They have a monitor now that you wear for 3 to 5 days 24 hour a day that measures your glucose every 90 seconds. You keep track of the food you eat at the same time. You might ask your doctor about wearing one of those. Its will give a graph of the whole time and really let you know what is going on. If you don't have insurance it might be kind of pricey tho.

Make an appointment or get referred to a Certified Diabetes Educator. A CDE can work with you by checking your bgl's, diet, exercise and medications to fine tune whatever needs tuning to get better A1C1 results. It may be that you need to change your diet a little. Or increase your exercise. Or modify your medications, or a bit of all three.

Keep a daily log of your food intake, exercise and bgl's for a few weeks and take that with you when you visit the CDE.

watching your diet and exercise "a little" isn't going to cut it.
You need to consult a nutritionist and get on a plan. Metformin will help, but it doesn't mean you can just eat what you want, as you have just found out. If you don't know where to find a nutritionist, ask your doctor for a referral. Plan on getting into a diet where you will lose 10% of your current body weight. That alone might get you off the medication entirely.
