that is a standard price for and AKC certified (and popular) dog breed. DO NOT buy a dog that is $500. a reputable breeder would never let that dog go for so little. make sure the dog is akc certified, has its shots and the papers to prove it, and go to the breeders house to see where the puppies have been kept. its always good to have the puppy's parents on premises (but the mother should at least be there). make sure the place is safe and clean and if you get any wierd feelings from the breeder, leave and find another. The breeder should be able to answer any questions you have fully and should not try to push any particular puppy on you. spend 20-30mins w/the puppies and pick one that you 'click' with. also, the breeder should offer a refund if, after you take the puppy to the vet, there is something wrong w/it. NEVER buy from a breeder that doesnt offer this. this is one of those things that you get what you pay for. backyard breeders and puppy mills sell dogs cheaply (say, for $500) because they are continually 'cranking out' new puppies. the dogs are likely abused and being bred by people that couldnt care less about anything but the money.

why not contact a chihuahua rescue and adopt one that needs a home (and pay far less) and use the money you saved to pay for medical bills, good qulaity food, etc.
I have never understood people who will pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for an animal then feed it crappy food because the better food is too expensive.
I am not saying you are going to do this, but why would you want such a small puny dog?

There is no such a thing as a "teacup" Chihuahua. They are, to be blunt, overpriced, undersized, out of standard dogs which are being bred for $$$. Many of these dogs have serious health issues as a result.
Your safest bet is to get one from petfinder.org, Chihuahua breed rescue or from a responsible breeder who is a member of the Chihuahua Club of America.

No chihuahua should cost even close to 1000, and dogs that small are typically bred from runts, which often means many health problems.
