Here are tips:

1. Take your time - my journey from meat eater took about a year.
2. Start out using some basic substitutes for the meat you are used to in foods where you won't even notice - ground meat replacements are available in the frozen food sections.
3. Leave meat off things that don't need it - pizza, salad, spag, etc.
4. Get some good cookbooks when you are ready to branch into more interesting foods - Moosewood books and New Farm Vegetarian are two of my favorites.
5. If you are worried about what to eat check out the book "Diet for a New America" it will cover many of the health questions.

If u want to be a vegetarian u have to be committed. Have you thought of the foods u are going to give up? Or u feel like vomitting whenever u think of meat? And there are different types of vegetarian so u should do some research on it.

Pure vegan, ovo-lacto, etc.

What is your level of committment and acceptance? And your diet should be balanced because vegetarians may have lack of some essential nutrients. To solve this problem u have to accept a wide variety of foods. And if u are not having meals at home, will u make your own lunchbox or find a vegetarian eatery (which may not be easily available)?

If u have considered carefully then,
-do research on the types of vegetarian diet
-do research on the variety of foods u can eat
-plan balanced meals to suit ur nutritional needs
-stick to ur diet until u get used to it.

Anyway think carefully.

I remember when I made the decision. I think it is important that you don't just quit eating meat overnight. I have friends that made themselves anemic doing that. First cut down to maybe 3 portions a week. Try eating fish or chicken, that made my transition easier. Pick up a bunch of boca, morningstar farms, and tofurky meat substitutes and try them out. Next, get a good vegetarian cookbook. They will help you balance your diet using dairy, fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, and grains. Then over the course of a month or so, slowly reduce your meat intake to 1 or 2 times a week and than not at all.
Try not to think of what you are restricting from yourself but as what you are doing for your health; both mentally and physically... And it's good for the planet.
I truly wish you the best of luck!

I'm glad to hear you're interested in becoming a Vegetarian. Not only will your body benefit from a vegetarian diet, especially since we are not designed to eat animal meat, but you'll also be helping our environment in many other ways. I suggest you do your research and don't listen to those like veganjockstrap (he has his jock strap on a little to tight) who are negative and ignorant on the subject. There is a lot of information out there that can help you.

First off, those videos are real...how else can they act those out? Anyways...congrats on a great choice! I became a vegetarian a year ago because of this...I love animals! It will be hard the first month or so, and sometimes you get meat cravings. But the truth is, there is so much vegetarian food that tastes good out there! I love the garden burgers, margarita pizzas, pasta, rice, noodles, veggie stir fry, etc...there is so much out there! Just make sure you don't replace a lot of your food with cheese. And, make sure you get enough protein. I put soymilk on my cereal instead of reg. milk...one, it tastes good, and two, it's a good protein source. Other good sources are edimomi, peanut butter, soymilk smoothies, rice, beans etc.

Here is a good soymilk smoothie recipe:
1 cup of orig. soymilk, 1 banana, 1 cup of strawberries, and ice in a blender. Makes a good smoothie! If you want to change it, choose a diff. flavor soymilk or diff. fruits! Good luck and don't give up! You're saving lives!

First thing for you to know, a vegetarian person has more choices than just salads ;-)!!!! Try going to

http://vegan-food.net/

(They have a recipe for VEGAN french toast)

allrecipes.com has a section for vegetarians.

If you want to eat out, try Indian restaurants because they have a LOT of vegetarian options.

It also depends, are you going to be

lacto-ovo-vegetarian (you eat dairy products(lacto) and eggs(ovo) and everything)

pesci-vegetarian (I might have spelled that wrong, but whatever, but they eat everything the lacto-ovo people do, and they eat fish too.)

Vegan ( this is the most veggie you can go, people argue that you can get a vitamin b12 deficiency, but there's vitamin enriched soy or rice milk, since vegans dont eat any animal products including dairy products and eggs)

Get that packet from PETA called a Vegetarian Starter Kit, they have some vegetarian recipes and advice, more info on the health stuff (no hazards because there are none). You can order it, or else just get the PDF. There are other Vegetarian Starter Kits too, from other sites if you just wanna search.

I just stopped eating meat cold turkey. Excuse the "pun"

If you are going to become a vegetarian, then just stop eating meat and buy some soy products (Boca burgers, morningstar farms, etc) for your protein instead.

Those films don't really depict what really goes on at all farms. PETA is just getting to you. They try to brainwash you into thinking things that aren't actually happening. How do you know where this film was taken? How do you know the meat you eat is killed this way? You don't. For all you know it could be PETA who actually killed that cow in the video for use as scare tactics to make people become a Veggie. Many farmers actually treat their animals well and don't do half the crap you see on that website. There is only a few farmers that actually do that stuff and I doubt any of those videos were made in the US or Europe. PETA just wants to stuff propaganda down you throat and you shouldn't fall for it. Goto your local dairy farm and talk with the farmer. You will be surprised how well he treats his cows.

Damn the vegan regulars are already giving me thumbs down lol. You gotta laugh. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Try cutting down on your meat consumption - find non-meat recipes or frozen dinners until you can cook your own.

That is how I am starting.....all the disease that animals have and we eat it....yuck!!
