I have noticed that even foot scrubs and similar products are labeled safe or not safe for diabetics to use. I'm borderline diabetic and I have dry cracked heel. Should I be concerned?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that can cause damage to the organs and the nerves, especially the peripheral nerves which extend into the hands and feet. It is important to keep your feet clean, dry and free of cuts, bruises or sores which may become infected. Every day you should check your feet. This can be done before or after a shower or bath

Often, diabetics suffer from neuropathy, or nerve death in their feet. They feel nothing, including pain in their feet, so they can injure themselves and get some very serious infections without ever feeling it.

If this should happen to you, you will have full blown diabetes, and you will feel a burning pain in your feet before complete lack of sensation.

I believe it has something to do with getting a small cut or abrasion ~ they can get a nasty infection and loose a toe, or even worse, begin amputations ~ they are susceptable to nerve damage (neuropathies) due to the circulation and what have you of diabetes. So many things are connected to something else.

They really have to be careful of cuts....anything causing an opening for bacteria.

I'm not sure why this happens, but with diabetics if you get an open sore on your foot it could get infected which could lead to gangrene which then leads to amputation. A friend of mine had this happen to him....he lost both legs up to his knee joints. Diabetics must use caution!!
