Every person is different. What works well for others, may not work well for you. If you have genital warts you should see your doctor. There are several different ways a person can get rid of them.

A doctor can prescribe a cream that the person can use at their convenience and at their home. Aldara cream and Condylox cream are available with a prescription.

If these creams don't work or the doctor doesn't want to try them, the doctor might suggest applying medication at the office. This is done by the doctor, is done in several visits and can be pretty expensive. Some of the medications that can be used include: Podophyllin resin (Podofin), Intralesional (injected into wart lesion) interferon, Fluorouracil (Efudex, Fluoroplex), and Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or bichloroacetic acid (BCA).

A person can also have surgery to remove genital warts by freezing (cryosurgery), burning (electrocautery), or laser treatment. Surgery is occasionally used to remove large warts that have not responded to other treatment.

Although treatments can get rid of the warts, they do not get rid of HPV, so warts can recur after treatment. The body's immune system typically clears the virus anywhere from 8 to 13 months, but it occasionally remains in the body for a lifetime.

It is important that both partners are treated. Make sure you follow the treatment - genital warts are easy to treat when they are small and few.

Genital warts can be treated by swabbing with the cell poison, podophyllotoxin (Condyline).

Some cases may be referred to a specialist in skin and sexually transmitted diseases who will remove the warts under local anaesthesia using surgery, freezing, or laser treatment.

Outlook

Anyone who has previously been infected with genital warts runs the risk that they will return now and then for the rest of their life. However, sometimes there is only one outbreak.

The treatment can last for months.

Some wart types are thought to be connected to the occurrence of cell changes in the neck of the uterus and cancer in the sexual organs. It is therefore a good idea for women with genital warts in the vagina to have a smear test as well as following the prescribed treatment and having the normal tests.

It is not necessary to be referred to a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic by a doctor. You can arrange an appointment directly, and in total confidence. Contact phone numbers are always listed in the phone book.

HPV is treated, in the form of genital warts, by applying liquid nitrogen onto the wart and then picking them off. Non painful until the area around the removal starts to thaw.

As an FYI, HPV can cause certain cancers and some forms are not visible, make sure tests are done as well as a female having pap smears done.

My brother had them and he visited a Sexual Health Centre and they were frozen off. I think they re-appeared about 3 weeks later and he went for another session. He was advised that they would reoccur until the body had cleared the virus from his system.

I don't think after the second session he needed to go again.

Warts can be burned off, cut off, frozen off, and there is cremes that can be spread on them. Basically; they have to be physically destroyed.

I think they treat them at the GUM clinic using an ointment that reduces them but you cannot get rid of them once you have them, they will always lie dormant
