"Gang" usually refers to curries. But a Thai friend told me it actually refers to any soupy dishes -- not necessarily something spicy. So Green Curry Chicken, Tom Yum Kung, and even Cabbages in Broth are referred as "Gang". How would you categorize that in English? Does "Curry & Soupy Dishes" sound ok?

Yes, your friend is right. "Gang" could be a curry, clear soup, or anything that is in some form of liquid. To say that it is a "soupy" dish is not correct either as Gang Keow Wan (green curry ) is NOT a soup. It is not eaten like a soup. We also have "gang" which in western way of looking at it, the dish would be considered a "dessert" (Gang Bua Loi - which is made with sweetened coconut milk but it NOT eaten with rice or served as something to eat as a main meal)

The word "gang" more or less usually describe something that has been boiled in a pot and has liquid in it when served unless it has a special name for it.

"Gang" is NOT a category of food from Thailand. IT is more of a description of what it is. One can not categorise the way things are done in other cultures to fit the way western culture sees it. So don't try to categorise everything to fit the way you think things should be.
