Ok your probably not dying, but you should get to a doctor before it gets worse. They'll probably take a few chest x-rays and give you something to help you breath better - perhaps a nebulizer treatment. Then based on their diagnosis they'll send you home with something to control your shortness of breath at home (i.e. an inhaler, or maybe an oral steroid). Shortness of breath is never good, and should be taken seriously.

You may be having panic attacks. Go see a doc for sure. I believe there are anti-anxiety medications available that aren't so addicting now. Smoking does increase anxiety as well as breathing problems. I also happen to be an anxiety smoker. The doc can give you medicine as well as options that don't involve meds. Like breathing exercises, etc... to help control your panic/anxiety issues. Definitely get a handle on it before it consumes you're quality of life. Good Luck!

First of all, if you are seriously concerned that you might die, don't come to Yahoo. Call 911 and get to an emergency room.
If you only get the symptom when you have an anxiety attack, well, shortness of breath IS a symptom of anxiety attack. You are not going to die.... the worst it will happen is you will pass out. As long as you don't hit your head on your way down, you'll be fine.
If you have an anxiety problem, you better learn to live with it and learn the symptoms. If you panic about the symptoms, you will make your symptom even more severe. If the problems are severe, you should go see a doctor and possibly have the medications.

Stop smoking. You might have asthma! Go to doctor and check. I know it is hard to quit smoking because I did. I also have asthma and I was smoking 3 packs a day. But Praise the Lord with His help I gave them things up! I am now on ADVAIR and a breathing machine at home. So please consider giving up that bad habit. It might not send you to Hell, but while you are smoking makes you smell like you've been there.

Stop smoking and you'll greatly reduce your chances of dying of anything at age 20. Shortness of breath is a symptom of lung stress. Smoking makes it worse. I would go to a doctor and have him/her check my lungs as soon as possible.

Well it could be a breathing problem like the last responder said, or if it happens when you are anxious, it could be experiencing a panic attack or some type of panic disorder. Either way, seeing a doctor would probably be a good idea.
