As long as the shells stay firmly closed. The should not be allowed to become submerged in fresh water, as in melted ice. They will die quickly. 10 days seems a little long to me but maybe. I have kept them 5 days.

I could be disease or the heat. If you recently introduced a new bird into the coop then disease is the most likely answer. Consult a veterinarian for either preferably. Make sure they have plenty of water, get a bucket or bowl big enough to step into. They may need to give themselves a bird bath. Make sure they have plenty of food. Get rid of the dead chicken because the other will eat it. I know gross but it happens. Make sure the others are alright too. The death of the chicken could have been from the birds setting a pecking order. Look around the bodies of the chickens especially their backsides (that's where they usually go) Check for any type of anything that could be poisoning the birds as well. Lay off the starter mash and try layer crumles or the like. I used to put layer (or whatever you use) pellets in a bag and crushed them myself (with a small hammer), it shouldn't harm the babies and it may help your birds.
