For the same reason any other half-starving poor person would eat a dog, or maybe a cat. It's not a delicacy, it's decent, edible, meat, and you'd have to be stupid, or rich, to waste it. It's life is especially short if it's a sick or particularly vicious beast, while other dogs make good watchdogs and companions. 100 years ago Americans ate dogs and cats too, and in 100 years from now, our Chinese masters will eat steak while we are lucky to get ratatouille.

The Chinese are not the only people to eat dog or cat. While living in Italy I ate meat sauce made from dog and it was quite good tasting. Some countries do it for economical reasons, others cultural. Personally I don't see the difference in that and some Americans eating turtle or squirrel. Maybe they just like it!!

Different culture - different attitude and values. Chinese eat cats and dogs because to them - they are meat. Just like some european countries eat horses and Peruvian in the Andes eat guinea pigs.
Because some cultures see cats and dogs as domestic animals, to be loved and cherished, it is therefore seen as abhorrent to eat them. Just as Indian would find western cultures abhorrent because they eat cows (beef).
"Why eat cat and dog wen yu [sic] can eat steak???" - Remember that steak in some country is very expensive and only the wealthy can afford it.

I know for a fact that in china most of the people are VERY poor. Living as a farmer or factory worker making maybe $500 american dollars a year dosen't buy you a lot of food to live off of. If you are hungry enough you would probably eat anything you can get your hands on. I don't think we should judge people by what they eat because everybody has different backrounds and surcumstances.

Well, not just the Chinese eat cats and dogs. You are forgetting the Africans, South Americans, Native Americans, the Swiss, and many many more countries.

I don't think most of them do. In developing countries, they eat just about anything they can, especially in times of famine. Consider 2 Kings 6:25 - under seige, they were eating donkeys heads and dove dung (some versions read seed pods).
Or consider the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15) - he became so hungry that he ate pig slop.

For us its just a cruisine, one of the many foods we Chinese like to eat. Compare it to westerners enjoying a steak or roast chicken. And don't tell me eating cats and/or dogs are peculiar - they are only to your eyes. You can't judge others via perspective from your window.
I don't like your generalising just the Chinese eating cats and dogs. Koreans also enjoy them.
Oswald - you're answer is ridiculous and I don't believe you are so stupid you don't know it. Vanessa - your answer is extremely unfair - why would we deny we eat such animals?
I personally think why aren't people questioning the Japanese on their practice of eating and hunting whales when this is a global and environmental issue? Since when were dogs and cats classified as endangered and protected species?
