Our wedding reception is around my mom's birthday and because my immediate family and extended all live apart, we thought it would be great to celebrate my mom's birthday too, especially since there are people flying in that my mom hasn't seen in awhile. People don't think we should celebrate her birthday at the reception and so while we don't really care since it's very family-oriented anyway (and I was going to have something at the reception up until now), we are trying to think of ways to celebrate or surprise her or something at some point during her stay.
Some ideas were instead of a cake, since we'll be having cake during the reception, that we have a jello cake in the shape of a birthday cake at home and a candygram singer? Any other ideas? She turns 59 so I'll be planning the milestone surprise birthday for next year too!
Thanks!

How wonderful that you want to share your special day with your mom!!!! Here are some ideas:
1. During the rehearsal dinner, turn it into an impromptu birthday celebration for Mom. Order a special cake, balloon arrangement, music, etc. and have the "surprise" come when you are thanking your family and attendants for being in the wedding.
2. Unless you are leaving right away for a honeymoon, how about a post-wedding brunch to celebrate Mom's special day? Breakfast or brunch the next day is a nice way to re-cap the festivities and celebrate her birthday.
3. Depending on when your family is all coming together for the wedding, you can plan a special dinner at your house to celebrate her birthday. On your wedding day, have a special toast made to her as well.
Instead of cake, how about cupcakes? A candygram is sweet, and you might also want to consider a special song to be played for the "women" of the family to dance to in honor of your mom.

On your special day(ish), you are so considerate to be thinking of your mom too! Kudos to you on that. Your cake idea sounds good. Candy gram singer sounds good. Considering she's 59 years young, mix it up and do a Banana Split buffet, with lots of different toppings, etc. And I think for her, surprise is key.... do the birthday hats, streamer poppers, and maybe start to do a speech and then switch by speaking about your fiancee and incorporate it to be speaking about your mother and then break out the hats and sing "happy birthday". I promise she'll cry. It could all be very touching...Everyone can have put the hats on at that point.

Take her for a mother of the bride brunch to celebrate her birthday! You can do it the day before your reception or even the day OF the reception. Either way it will give you a chance to share some time together...

Since next year is her milestone birthday, just give her a little something this year. Give her a Cookie Bouquet ( do a web search ) and a gift certificate to her favorite store. She will be seeing the people she hasn't seen for a long time at your wedding.

Do not celebrate her birthday at your wedding reception. Do not mix the two events.
Celebrate her birthday with a birthday cake of her own on a different date.

Try asking her she wants. Tell her that it is important to you and your sister that you guys get her a gift that she will like and enjoy. If that fails then go with the gift card idea like the guy up^^ there said. My best birthday gifts have been the ones that I asked what the person wanted and went out and got it. Good luck and remember "it's the thought that counts!"

A day of relaxation and pampering at a spa would be nice. It could be a way of saying "Thank You" for taking good care of you all your life.
