I am going to assume most of the posters are basing their opinion on Italian-American cooking. French and Italian are both delicious. People prefer Italian over French because they are more familiar with Italian food and because French food is partially judged on the overall French reputation. I like Italian food better because it is what I am most familiar with-I grew up with it and it is healthy(think garlic and lemon), but no doubt I am sure French food is delicous too.
Italian food in the states is not the same as Itallian food from Italy. What Americans consider Italian food is really southern italian because the majority of immigrants came from southern italy and sicily.

You vex me! I love French cooking and it's harder to do. Italian is just wonderful and easier to prepare. I can only eat small amounts of French cooking because it is heavy on sauces and sometimes cheeses. So I do less harm to myself. But Italian food is so good I over eat. Both have wonderful wines. If I have the money French is definately my first choice. Unless i am jonesing for a great Italian dish and some Barollo.

It just depends how educated you are when it comes to food. Most Americans prefer Italian because they have never been exposed to fine food. If you go to Asia for example they will prefer French over Italian ! But now cooking is literally booming in today's world: French techniques are exported to other countries to create different kind of new gastronomies and French chefs travel and bring back some influence from other countries.
To get back to your question: Italy, the south of France and Spain are very similar (tomatoes, herbs, fish, pizzas with different names depending on the location). The north of France has a lot of influence from countries bordering France; So there one thing to remember: France has a lot of diversity and that's why it makes it interesting. Just be open minded and educate yourself. Any kinds of food is good when it's done well. I hope it will open some minds :-)

I would go with Northern Italian.
Southern Italian gives me heartburn. Most French is too fussy.
