There are many factors that can affect your blood pressure. Some of those factors are:
- Stress (Emotional, mental and physical)
- Some medications can cause a rise in BP
- Poor sleep habits and sleep disorders (Sleep Apnea, not enough sleep, sleep disturbances, etc.)
- Body position as the reading is taken (lying down. sitting, arm not level with heart, etc.)
- Also there is a condition called "White Coat Hypertension". This is when a person visits a doctor and their BP goes up. It's an example of mental stress.
Please remember that a persons BP can change drastically over a short period of time, often within minutes. No single reading can indicate High or Low BP. Several readings over time must be taken before there is a need for concern. Please don't be alarmed by this one reading.
To help ease your mind, I have included some links to some trusted web sites. Check out the links below and relax, your BP is on the rise. I hope this brings it back down, settles your anxiety and provides some education.
My information comes from my experience with 5x Bypasses in Oct. 2006. I also have High BP (Hypertension) and High Cholesterol (Hypercholesterolemia), COPD (Emphysema) and Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Sincerely,
Terry

It could be caused by a vairety of causes. Are you stressed at your job or driving or where you live? Do you have health issues? Are you an older male and your system is trying to compensate? Are you on any medications that help with an arthritic condition such as Celebrex or Meloxicam? Suggest you see your doc asap to find out the cause. I was exactly the same as you in the 150-160 range over 95-105 range. It ended up being caused by Viaoxx I was taking for arthritus in my back. It never did go back down to likeable normal levels, so I was prescribed a pill to help. Now I am consistant 140-145 over 70-85 which is acceptable.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

Two things come to mind. One is heredity and the other is stress. Does either of your parents have high blood pressure? Do other people in your family have it? You may just be genetically predisposed to it. If you try a low-salt diet, keep up your exercise and still don't fall within the "normal" range, your doctor may put you on meds just for safety. (The ones I'm on are very cheap -- $5 for a month's supply -- so even if you haven't got prescription insurance it may be a worthwhile investment for you.)
I also found that my blood pressure rose when I was in a higher-stress job, and dropped back toward normal when I was able to find one that was more rewarding and less anxiety-making.

Check with a doctor. Maybe your blood pressure is not high.
Mine is normal all the time but it raises a bit under stress and donating blood stresses me a lot. Nothing wrong with it but having someone putting a needle in my vein...

there are numerous causes for high blood pressure, and right now I suggest to you that cause is not as important as treatment....a blood pressure like that is edging into stroke territory. You need to see a doctor as soon as possible and get that taken care of. The doctor can also explain the various causes to you when you see him...but see him SOON.
