I think drunks and smokers should be allowed to kill themselves if they want to. I do have a problem with second hand smoke. I didn't give them permission to kill me. Kill yourself if you want to. Drink yourself into oblivion if you want to but don't smoke around me and don't drink and drive. While I'm at it, I have no problem with gang violence. If you want to join a gang, go for it. Sell drugs, kill other gang members, but leave non-gang members alone. Keep the rest of us out of your civil wars. On a non-related subject, the war in Iraq, they signed up for the military, I didn't sign up to hear about them getting killed on the six o clock news. You want to enlist in the army and get yourself killed, here's a pen, sign on the dotted line. Why doesn't fox come ask me if I want to hear how many people died in Iraq today? What's the big deal about that? Who really cares? It's population control, whether it comes from smoking, drinking or a bomb. You're right, it's not a big deal

You're right, alcoholism is a very big problem. However, I have heard of families torn apart by smoking. More accurately, never forming in the first place. With a smoker, it is quite apparent: he smokes, and he smells like smoke. So for those who are bothered by it - they don't date smokers for long. Alcoholism is less apparent. Someone migh have no idea she/he is dating an alcoholic.
Your smoking affects people around you in a very direct way. Note that you're not forced to quit, you can smoke when other people are not affected.
If there was an effective way to stop drunks it would be a good thing.

I am 31.... I stated smoking weed when i was 16.. and it was bliss..i loved the way it made me feel. I kept it to weekends at parties. When i was 18 i was full fledged chronic..i always had to be stoned. I never really recognized it as being a problem at the time ( though now i recognize it as being a HUGE problem) since i could function normally at work, driving , being social etc. I then went away for a year and was unable to find weed anywhere. So i quit ( not by choice) after a year of nothing, i finally found some..BUT, when i smoked it, i didn't get the same blissful feeling. Instead i felt insecure, paranoid and very very anti social. Even though the effect wasn't pleasurable, i continued for years mostly because i was chasing the high i used to get. I say smoke in moderation...keep it as a social thing. Be very careful..it messes with your brain chemistry and can pull you into a deep depression very easily

Do you think losing a loved one to lung cancer due to smoking is considered tearing a family apart due to smoking? It is!!!
You may think there are far worse things but you obviously haven't had someone you love die from smoking. Watching someone die of lung cancer is one of the worst things you could actually witness. I know first hand. So now you HAVE heard of a family being torn apart (due to death) from smoking. THAT'S THE BIG DEAL!
Also people with asthma have a problem with smoke. I also know that personally. I can't go somewhere where I smell smoke because it takes my breath away. Breathing is a big deal also. I don't care if anyone smokes but why not in there own home where it won't bother anyone but them. In My Opinion.

Not necessarily. I would say smoking and drinking are equally detrimental..as far as health goes. Yes, drinking impares and stupid people drive drunk..but look at what happened during prohibition..it would just happen all over again..and that already proved pointless. Drunkenness isn't contagious and if the dude sitting across the room from me is drunk, it doesn't effect my health any (unless he gets rowdy for those people who feel like saying "well actually"). But if someone across the room is smoking, that DOES effect my health. My great aunt had to have a lung removed..and she never smoked once, her father did, and so did her husband..this is why smoking is illegal in public buildings (at least it is here in Maine).

Unfortunately, you cannot compare alcohol and tobacco.
It is political and with the baby boomers moving into politics: this is their rallying point.
It will get to the point of not allowing smoking anywhere and then something will be done about it.
And smoking can and does tear families apart, it just isn't as violent as alcohol.
Many children were (and still are) schooled against smoking; took it to heart and being unable to convincing their parents, grew up, moved away and refuse to visit.

Have you seen the movie: Thank You For Smoking? Where do you get the idea that alcohol is worse than smoking? That is not true. Smoking is the number 1 preventable cause of death out there. It's like saying: why should I NOT speed. There are far worse things out there, like serial killers. They commit heinous crimes...I'm just speeding a little...

Ok..I smoke....I don't like when ppl smoke around my kids though...smoking is rarely done in moderation...(I know I smoke a pack a day)...I do drink in moderation...2 or 3 drinks every 1 or 2 mos...Alcohol isn't a problem if you use it in moderation...but it does suck that I can't smoke in the bar!

That is very true... I think all the laws against smoking come from the fact that it not only affects your own health, but the people's around you...

Well, generally because people rioted in the 30s when the banned alcohol and the government doesn't want to deal with it.
