I mean no offense to any Wiccans. I am simply curious. I do not know if it is true and I'm asking something I don't know. I have no intention of slurring anyone's beliefs by putting "Harry Potter" and "Wiccan" in the same sentence. I became interested in Wicca when I read the novel "Maxine". (I wish I was so honed!) However, my attration to the occult didn't last very long. I have no intention of deriding anyone's beliefs. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

I've been a Wiccan since July of 1971, LONG before Harry Potter was even written about. Now, having actually READ a couple of Harry Potter books, I can SAFELY inform you that Harry is as much of a Wiccan as I am a pterodactyl. Harry Potter is FICTION, Wicca is NOT. It's the revival of a SET of religions that existed LONG before the advent of Christianity. No, it's NOT the SAME Religion. The Christians took care of that long ago by destroying ALL the works of the Pagan Religions, It is a rebuilt version of the old ways, based on snippets from here and there that have been pieced togehter and empty areas filled in based on following the general trend of the snippets.

This question is just another mis-informed judgement by someone who OBVIOUSLY has NO idea about the Religion that hes is attempting to discredit.

No. I became a Wiccan ("came home," or "set foot upon the Wiccan Path," as we say) long before Rowling published the first Harry Potter novel. I have read them--I enjoy children's literature--and I can assure you they have nothing to do with Wicca. Their values system and worldview are not particularly religious at all, but are closer to Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Zoroastrianism--religions that believe in the oppositional struggle of good vs. evil--than they are to Wicca. While the Narnia books are indisputably linked to Christian beliefs, there is nothing Wiccan about the Potter novels.

What this is really about is that some right-wing Christian evangelicals love to see a good book-burning, and the Harry Potter novels are the latest fuel for that fire. But this has nothing to do with Wicca. Looking for books more likely to lead to your exploring the Wiccan Path? Try these:

---the poems of Sappho
---the hymns to Inanna by Enheduanna
---the poetry of Walt Whitman
---Robert Graves, The White Goddess
---Joseph Campbell, The Masks of God
---Marija Gimbutas, The Language of the Goddess

Although I'm a fan of the books, Harry Potter magic is nothing like Natural Magick. JK Rowling admittedly made up most of the incantations.

Although there is some historical background, that's just to keep it interesting and to learn a thing or two.

I've been Wiccan since 1999 I didn't know Harry Potter existed back then/

It's a book!!! Wicca really has nothing to do with Harry Potter. Some Wiccans are down to Earth people. Harry Potter is a story. That's like saying a common ghost story made people think of Christianity because of the Holy ghost. How crazy.

I'm a Celtic Pagan rather than a Wiccan but anyway I was following that religion long before I read the 1st Harry Potter book.

They are great stories for kids and adults alike but they have nothing to do with religion. The magic I and many other Pagans believe in and which some of us use has NOTHING to do with any of the made up spells in the books.

I am wiccan and Harry Potter had absolutely NOTHING to do with it. It is fantasy. Period. Some people are so naive. People who would tell you they became wiccan because of a novel are insults to my religion. They are what we call wannabees or fluff bunnies. They like the notoriety of being different but aren't willing to do the work. Wicca is not an easy religion. It takes a lot of study in many fields.

I'm interested in Wicca, but I've never read any of the Harry Potter novels. Of course, I'm a bit older than those books, and my interest started before they were published. =)

I think my favorite "witch book" so far is The Witching Hour, by Anne Rice, good stuff. And yes, fiction, just like Harry Potter.

No, I was Wiccan long before I ever heard of Harry Potter. I read the books, they have nothing to do with Wicca.

Not at all.
I've been interested in all sorts of things since I started reading over 55 years ago. What I like a lot about Wicca is that it doesn't jump up and down saying it's the only truth; it doesn't try to convert the world; it has never caused wars; wars have never been caused because one brand of Wicca wanted power over another brand of Wicca.
What I love about Wicca is that one simple rule: An it harm none, do what ye will.
I do so love the KISS principle.

No I've read and re-read the Harry potter series and I haven't been interested in Wicca not once. Laura Malory just wanted her fifteen minutes and to start up some drama. She needs to get a life and take care of her Kids if their converting to Wicca.
